I met Derek on his first day when he came to work in Portarlington on his motorbike that was in the mid sixties, we went on several holidays together and had some great craic.
He was a most obliging and helpful person who will be sadly missed.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our good friend and neighbour Derek. He was someone one who would do anything for anyone, his kindness touched so many yet he still loved having the craic and having a laugh. While in the Nursing Home he still kept an interest in what was going on in the parish. You will be greatly missed Derek but our loss is Heaven's gain. Rest peacefully .

So sorry to hear of Derek's death. He was a lovely gentleman, a character with a great sense of humour. My late husband Abe was very fond of Derek and the fun and banter they had. However there was also a serious and caring side to Derek. He was always so co- operative and helpful to Abe and Canice when they were digging graves. It was an honour for my three sons to join Canice and the gravediggers who prepared Derek's final resting place in Anatrim Churchyard.
