Derek Johnston

My deepest condolences to the Johnston family. I have many fond memories of Mr. Johnston at Bandon Grammar School. He was my history teacher in 95. I remember him having his students’ genuine interests at heart and having an unfathomable knowledge of history. Mr. Johnston will be sadly missed, a true gentleman and a sincere teacher.

I met Derek through my role as Secretary of Munster Schools Rugby. He was a magnificant ambassador for the game, his searing honesty, his evenhandedness in all matters affecting the common good of Munster schools rugby, his objectivity in decision making and his wry humour. This generated trust, loyalty and respect. This was a honourable and rewarding place to inhabit with him. These values were core and evident in all his dealings and reflected so well the integrity he brought to his life and his beloved Bandon Grammar School. He will be missed. Commiserations to Jennifer and family.

I am delighted to have met you and your family at Derek’s funeral. All that was spoken about on that day, both from the alter and in the Grammar School, was so true. Derek lived a life full of honesty, credibility and integrity and he gave many, including me, such a solid start in life from the age of 12. He looked after me and looked out for me, for which I am eternally grateful. Your days will be long and tinged with loneliness but I am certain that the wonderful memories of Derek will sustain you in to the future.

His respect and encouraging support for St Clements in promoting rugby I will never forget .Although we have driifted apart in recent years I have no doubt of the pride Derek enjoyed at the brilliant successes his beloved Brandon Grammar has achieved in recent years . Derek was a perfect gentleman and a gentle soul and was so proud of his school as were all those other devoted selectors of their schools . Brilliant memories of those wonderful evenings spent in the company of Derek picking Munster School teams .

Derek represented BGS as a selector on what was then known as the Munster A Schools XV for schools outside the well established schools.His support and encouragement for Ardscoil Ris Rugby was much appreciated.
