Derek Mahon-Smith

Sad to hear that Derek has died, May he Rest in Peace. Both Physics graduates from UCD, we were friends and worked together as researchers in the Department of Chemical Engineering in UCL, and subsequently in the GEC Hirst Research Centre, Wembley, from 1961 to 1965. Went our separate ways, but I met Derek a few times when I was a guest lecturer in WIT. Derek was a lovely thoughtful man, an intellectual. My sympathy to Derek’s family on their sad loss.

Sincere sympathy to Derek's family and friends on his passing. He was a true gentleman. I met Derek and Anna many years ago in Toastmasters. They were a lovely couple and great fun. We had many a laugh together. May they both Rest in Peace.

Sincere condolences to the Mahon-Smith family on the passing of a true gentleman. Derek was a great physics teacher, who was able to dispel any fears his students may have had as they approached the subject for the first time. As the placement officer for the BSc in Applied Computing at WIT, he gave hundreds of students their first experience of working in the industry, and set many on their career path. He was a great colleague and a source of advice and sound counsel. May he rest in peace.

My sincere condolences to Derek's family and friends. He was my physics lecturer back in the 90s at WRTC. Although I never pursued physics for my Leaving Cert, it was a required subject on my course. Derek was excellent at explaining things, and I always enjoyed his classes and lab sessions. May he rest in peace.

I was very sorry to hear of Derek’s passing. I got to know Derek in WIT in the early 90’s. Since his retirement it was always a pleasure to bump into him in the supermarket in Tramore and discuss the latest golf and rugby events. May he rest in peace.

Derek was very kind to me when I started working in SETU infact we shared an office for a while. Derek loved chatting about Castlerea, Co.Roscommon and his connections there. He was particularly proud of his badminton achievements which he played in Castlerea with his double badminton partner Eamon Hayes.
Derek was a true gentleman,a scholar who was always a joy to meet.

I am so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing. He was such a kind and considerate gentleman. He was very supportive during my college years in Waterford RTC and I always enjoyed our chats when we’d run into one another over the years in Tramore.

Phyllis and I are so sorry to read of Derek's passing. He was a valued friend and colleague to many of us in his years with Waterford Institute of Technology. Our sincerest sympathies to his brother Ivan and his sisters Margot and Carmel and to his other family members. Devoted to his wife Anna throughout his life he will join her in their final resting place. Rest in peace Derek.
