I was so sad to hear of Derek’s passing. I met Derek when we were teacher training and we spent time in the Gaeltacht together. Derek was full of fun and life was certainly brighter with him around. My condolences to Derek’s family and friends at this time.

Derek was a very kind man I feel terribly sorry for his family and I give them all my thoughts Derek was always so fun and nice he was always kind he never got to be my teacher sadly I was always hopping he could be my teacher as he was one of the best teachers.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Degs, as we knew Derek. Although I only met him a few tims at our 'coffee meet ups' in the Phoenix Park he was very active on our MM Whats App group with words of encouragement and support to us all. As Jed said in his message "may Degs memory continue to shine brightly in all of our hearts". May Degs rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to the Mannion family and Derek's friends at this very difficult time. Cathal and I knew Derek through Cathal's brothers, Dermot and Michael, who knew Del from their time in Galway. We had so many great times at gigs, Electric Picnic and when Del was at our wedding and at Dermot's and Danae's wedding in Nice. Cathal and Dermot met Del in November and despite all he was going through, he kept his ever sunny side out, smiling and laughing during their catch up. Del will be very much missed by us all and we think of his family and very many friends as they cope with this immense loss. May Derek rest peacefully knowing the joy he brought to so many.

Deepest sympathies to Declan’s (Deg’s) family on his recent passing. I knew him through the Dublin Myeloma Support group. He brought enthusiasm and hope to the group. It was a pleasure to chat with him, and he was so encouraging to all of us on different myeloma journey's even when his own health deteriorated he stayed in touch through the what’s app group and during his long recent stay in the Hermitage he kept fighting and chatting. He was such an inspiration to us all.

My sincere sympathy to Derek's family and friends, I was in college with Derek and remember him always with a smile on his face. We had great times and I have lovely memories of him. I am truly so sad to hear of him having endured an illness and his life ending far too soon. Rest well Derek, keep smiling.

I still remember the first time Degs joined our Myeloma Zoom meeting. He had only recently been diagnosed. Such a lovely man—so young, vibrant, and full of life. An unimaginable loss. My deepest sympathy to the family. May his memory continue to shine brightly in all of our hearts.

It was with shock and deep sadness that I only very recently learned of the passing of Derek. I only knew Derek (or Degs as we called him) for the past year or so and that was because we both shared the same illness and treatment schedule, and we were in the same Support Group. But in that short space of time Derek made a huge and lasting impression on me and others in our Group - for his courage and strength in dealing with adversity and for his support, encouragement and his wisdom shared with many of us. Derek was a true gentleman and his kindness, compassion and empathy were among his defining qualities and clear for all of us to see. It was a privilege for me to make Derek's acquaintance even for a short time as he was an exceptional human being; and I would like to express my heartfelt condolences now to his parents, his sister and his extended family on your sad sad loss. RIP Derek, your suffering is over.

My deepest sympathy to the Mannion family on the very sad passing of Derek. I only met him once but he left such a lovely and lasting impression. He was so chatty, friendly and kind hearted. He spoke with such great love of his parents, sister, brother in law nieces and nephew. He missed his school and pupils greatly and was no doubt a very special teacher. He greatly missed his late cousin Jacinta also, whom I had the pleasure of working with in St. Paul's. They were both beautiful souls. May Derek's gentle soul rest in peace reunited with Jacinta and all his loved ones gone before him.

My fondest memories of Derek were at the end of school day walking past his room to hear great tunes blaring as he prepped for the following day. His passion for teaching was contagious. He was the dream colleague, always willing to give a helping hand or have a chat, where you'd end up learning something new about the world. Derek had a great sense of humour and often had us in stitches. He will always be a core part of Lucan Educate Together. ❤️

Deepest sympathies to Dereks family. As a teacher in a neighbouring school, I found Derek to be a gentle, trustworthy and reliable fellow teacher. He set up a basketball match once a week in Lucan Leisure Centre back in the late 2000s for teachers from local schools and I look back in great fondness at those times. He included everyone and made you feel so welcome.

Deepest sympathies to Derek's Mam, Pap, Oliva and his beloved Mannion Clán.

Many is the epic night of craic and partying I had with Del/Degs along the Corrib and then later the Liffey taverns. Efferescent, with a zest for life and great humored no matter was it the first round or when we had long lost count. He was the glue that made the disparate strands whole, putting all at ease. Testament to his wonderful character are the heartfelt condolences from his colleagues in teaching and engineering, along with so many indebted students touched by his magnetic joie de vivre and warm intellect. I feel so privileged to have had a close friendship with this mighty Gael.

Through Derek I met his close cousin Liam and the wider Mannion circle. Simon spoke beautifully of the precious connections between the cousins and I know they share this intolerable grief.

My heart goes out to the Mannions losing Jacinta and now Derek. May the cherished memories offer some solace and joy.
