Im so very sorry to hear this news and im thinking of you all. Derek really was a true legend and there'll never be anything like him again. My forever pal i sure do hope u meet my pops on the highway to heaven xx

I used to love coming to see Derek, Padraig, Siobhan, and Vivienne on my summer holidays, lots of fond memories of that time. Derek was a lovely bloke, he was funny and always very kind to me.

There's not enough words to descibe what a good man Derek was, he touched the lives of everyone that met him. He had such a good sense of humour always made you laugh.

We used to call him santy when we were kid's, he was so big he towered over us all. Then when we had kids ourselves, our children thought the same thing, he looked like santy. 😊 He was so good to me many times over the years , when i needed help if he could, he would be there. Behind the wheel of his car, with a cigarette in his hand , and his music on.

He had such good energy , he will be really missed. To Viv, Shivon, Podge and Pat, your all in my prayers.

A true gentleman with a heart bigger than his six-foot frame. Uncle Derek loved, laughed, and gave more than anyone asked. the heart of an angel. He faced so much in life but never lost his kindness, his laughter, or his love for family. Resting now with those gone before him, Forever missed, never forgotten. ❤️

I will always miss Derek, a lovely man in every way, with a wonderful sense of the ridiculous, particularly in Irish politics.
We had many pints together in many places- McDaid's, Kehoe's, Mulligan's, Downey's in Ballyer, Bongo Ryan's, the Old Dub, the Palace, the Scotch House on Eden Quay...
he was a true Dub and a great friend in my early years.
My heart-felt condolence to his siblings and children and to their extended families.
"No stopping before Bongo Ryan's" always made me laugh.
