Our deepest sympathies are with Camilla, Emma, and the Cahill family. We are thinking of you all at this difficult time. Dermot was a lovely man. We used to meet him on the school runs with Donal and Simon. We enjoyed the chats. May he rest in peace.
To Camilla and all of the family, I'd like to express my deepest sympathy on the loss of your beloved Dermot. I was fortunate to have been lectured by him in Trinity in International Economics in the early 70's: his classes were always a pleasure to attend and his ability to get across the most complicated ideas was unsurpassed. Whenever we met in more recent years, it was an equal pleasure to chat to him, and to hear his views on how the nation was progressing. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
Our very sincere sympathy Camilla to you and all the family on the death of Dermot. May he rest in peace.
Sincerest condolences to the McAleese family. I'm very sorry to have missed Dermot's funeral.
The measure of Dermot is in the volume, variety and sincerity of all the tributes to him since his passing. He was patient, generous with his time and hugely encouraging of all. Everyone has their 'Dermot story'. I remember his interactions with students in second-year lectures, taking every contribution (no matter how off the wall) in his stride. I also remember vividly his phone call to the house ahead of Trinity Monday: "Do you plan to go on Trinity Monday? I think it would be a good idea!" delivered in a way that only Dermot could. (Another fond memory is from 2001, when the Student Economic Review committee were thrilled to have dragged him - and John O'Hagan - out to the night club after the launch!)
And of course he was an inspiration, opening the eyes of so many of his students to what economics can do for wider society (in Ireland and beyond).
May he rest in peace.

Camilla, so sorry to hear of Dermot's death. He was beloved and deeply respected as our favourite professor at TCD. Always gentle, always encouraging, always intellectually challenging, and so humorous and charming! Wishing you and your family safe passage through this stormy time.
My sincere condolences to Dermot's family. Dermot was a true gentleman and a distinguished scholar who shared his wisdom through outstanding teaching.

Our deepest condolences. My father had worked with Dermot and held him in such high esteem. We met on a few occasions in Trinity and he was such a kind and lovely person. Sending all our prayers and sympathy.
Dear Camilla, Emma and Susannah and family,
Sincere condolences on the loss of Dermot, or in my head, always Professor McAleese. As a former student, I knew him to be an incredibly generous, supportive, friendly and positive man, who encouraged and helped me on my way during my time at Trinity and beyond. I regard myself very lucky to have known him and I will remember his smile with such fondness. Thank you for sharing him with us.

I was sorry to be away and unable to attend Dermot's funeral. I well remember how delighted the second year Economics students in UCD in 1969 were to discover that Dermot--recently arrived from the US--would be their instructor in microeconomics. His analytical precision and cheery demeanour combined to make his lectures a high point of each week. Soon he decamped to Trinity, but remained a reliable source of advice to me and others over the years. I think he loved the university life, and contributed to much to generations of students as well as to the economics profession in Ireland. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
Remembering Dermot as an outstanding economist, a very fine human being of great kindness and generosity.
Dear Camilla. Please accept my condolences for your loss. I loved Dermot’s warm smile and sense of humour, including fun exchanges with Monica about ‘n’importe quoi’. Hé took great enjoyment in being surrounded by the Gallivan ‘girls’. Very best wishes to you and your girls. Judy
I was a student of his in the early 90's. A bright vivacious man, his ability to encourage while lecturing or one on one stayed with you.
He positively touched so many peoples lives.
My condolences to his family.
Rest in peace.

I graduated from TCD economics in 1994 and worked for Dermot as a summer research assistant. He was a great teacher, an gentleman and a formative influence on many who came out of that department. I last met him about 15 years ago when he was telling me about his work with Dun Laoghaire Harbour. He will be greatly missed and leaves an important legacy. Deepest sympathies to his family.
I was so sorry to hear of Prof McAleese's passing. (Thank you Jonathan Knee for letting me know.) He was a great intellect and academic of course, but as a '79-'83 ESS student of his, (& subsequently an MSc student also), what I remember most strongly was his natural charm, grace, thoughtfulness & kindness to all of his students. He was ever pastoral. I am grateful to have known him and to have been his student. My sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.
Sincerest condolences to Camilla and all the McAleese family. I'm so sorry to have missed Dermot's funeral. When I was an undergraduate at Trinity, he was my tutor and the best teacher I had in College. Following completion of post-graduate studies in 1977, my career had advanced to selling In Dublin magazine at Front Gate where a chance encounter with Dermot led to me becoming his research assistant for the best part of a year. With his warm encouragement, patience and generosity, he stimulated in me a much greater interest in economics than I had ever anticipated. I learnt more in that year than I had done in the previous five. This experience, together with the very helpful introductions he made, led me on directly to a happy and fulfilling career. Thus, Dermot had a profound and beneficial influence on me, and I will be forever grateful.
We were so sorry to learn of Dermot’s passing and our deepest sympathy to Camilla and all the family.
We were students in Dermot’s first class in 1970 and have been privileged to have known him well for many years. He was an outstanding role model for all of as an exceptional intellect who inspired his students with his independence and unfailing objectivity. Above he was a wonderful gentleman who took the time and trouble to care for his students and colleagues on a personal basis..

I was saddened today to hear of Dermot's passing. He was adviser on my Master's thesis and I later worked as his Research Assistant for an IDA project. He subsequently spoke very eloquently at my wedding! I remember him with great fondness and gratitude. Sincerest sympathies to Camilla and all the family.
My sincere condolence to Camilla, Emma, Susannah, and to Dermot’s family.

Dermot welcomed me and a generation of others pursuing an MSc(Econ.) European Studies at Trinity in the early 80s. His warmth and generosity to this visiting American was unforgettable and it was an honor to remain in touch with him over these 40+ years. My sincerest condolences to Camilla and his wonderful extended familly who are his greatest legacy.
My deepest condolences to all of Dermot's family and friends. He taught me economics in 2004. He was a great educator with a fantastic sense of humour. May he rest in peace.

Dear Camilla, I have just heard about Donal’s passing - my deepest condolences to you and all the family. Donal taught on my MScBAP course some years ago. We all looked forward to his class. Sheelagh and I offer you and the wider family our sincere sympathy on the sad passing of Dermot, a truly remarkable man in so many ways for you and for so many more. We whole-heartedly agree with the glowing tributes paid to Dermot. They are more than justly deserved.

Dermot will be greatly missed by all of us. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

We first met Dermot in the late sixties when he and the late Brendan Walsh, fresh from PhD studies in the US, put our undergraduate studies in UCD on to a new plane by introducing us to cutting-edge economics. He opened our eyes to exciting fields of study and research, helping shape our subsequent careers. Our romance also blossomed in that heady exposure to new ideas.
Dermot's smile and his infectious enthusiasm is also an abiding memory. That continued to be a feature of his life as an academic, welcoming and inspiring students. As so many tributes to Dermot have emphasised, he had a huge commitment to students, and a real gift for teaching.
Over the years, we have seen Dermot's contribution to the economics profession, to Trinity, and to public service, in the many roles he took on. As Dean in Trinity, he made a particular point of welcoming new staff. His friendship helped build teams.
His own work as an economist when he returned to Ireland was groundbreaking. However, for all who knew him, our first thoughts on hearing of his death was that we had lost a true friend.

My sincere condolences to Camilla, Emma, Susannah and the wider family. As a Research Assistant with Dermot in the far-off summers of 1987 and 1988, I can only echo the tributes here. As well as being a great academic, Dermot cared deeply about his country and was one of those who laid the groundwork for our extraordinary economic growth of the past almost 40 years. He was also a kind and decent man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé. 🙏

It is with great sadness that I heard the news of the passing of my former colleague, Professor Dermot Mc Aleese, Emeritus of Trinity College, Dublin.
Both of us were one time Deans of BESS and former Presidents of the Statistical and Social Inquiry of Ireland (SSISI).
Since my time at Trinity we engaged in insightful and fun conversations about Economics and life in general.
Professor Mc Aleese's contributions were vast and impactful. He held distinguished positions such as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Dublin, Associate Faculty at the School of International Management, Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees in Paris, and Whately Professor of Political Economy at Trinity College Dublin from 1979 to 2004. His leadership extended to roles such as Dean of the Faculty of Business Economic and Social Studies from 1999 to 2004 and Director of the Central Bank of Ireland from 1979 to 1996.
Other noteworthy roles held by Professor Mc Aleese include President of the Irish Economic Association from 1988 to 1990, Chairman of the Economic and Social Research Institute from 1988 to 1991, and President of The Statistical and Social Inquiry of Ireland (SSISI) from 1995 to 1998.
All done in the service of others.
Thank you Dermot
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.

I was very sad to hear of Dermot’s passing and have fond memories of him in Trinity. He was so friendly and witty, very positive and a great Dean who made everyone feel appreciated. He will be sorely missed, condolences to his family.
It is with great sadness that we read of the death of Dermot a self effacing grossly understated brilliant, friend of over 50 years, who showed his character by underplaying his great intelligence, wisdom and knowledge by giving space to those who wanted to learn, not only his students but all those who came in contact with him. His kindness and thoughtfulness in so many ways, exemplified when he cycled from Trinity to my office to give me the news and compliments to Jason our son on his results, having guided tutored and encouraged him like he did so many others, reflecting the joy he felt in their achievements, so much of which was attributable to his dedication as an educator and inclusive thoughtful academic. We send our condolences to Camilla, Emma, Susannah and their family for their great loss following a life well lived to be long remembered by all who had the joy and privilege to have him met savoured his company and been touched by him.
We regret we are unable to attend his funeral but our thoughts are with Camilla, Emma, Susannah and their families.
May his gentle soul rest in well deserved peace.
