I'm very sorry to hear of Dermot's passing. Only heard yesterday otherwise I would havee travelled from County Meath for his funeral. Dermot was my colleague, boss and friend in the Probation Service. He was simply a lovely kind and humorous man.

Thank you so much for your kind message and for sharing your memories of Martin. It brings comfort to know that both of our families shared such meaningful moments together on 4C. We are truly sorry for the loss of your father as well. It sounds like they both were surrounded by great love and care, and we hope they are at peace now. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Very sad to learn that Dermot, my friend & comrade for over 5 decades, has died. We both joined the Probation Service in late '71. At staff meetings and when I was in Cork he always greeted me warmly and offered to help. He was indeed a gentleman, popular with staff & with other agencies and looking to get people over difficulties. I will miss his cheerful good humour and offer his family my sincere sympathy

Sincere sympathies to the OConnell family on DERMOT’s death. It is sad to hear of the passing of such an honourable kind man, full of compassion and a sense of fairness in all his dealings. I have such good memories of his being placed as a mature student, under Frances Hishion’s remit in the Cork Anti Povery Resource Network to do a practical part of his Course in UCC.... I’m not sure who was learning from whom...but we had great fun...that was over 40 years ago...and he continued to work with those most challenged by life’s circumstances....I lionta De go gcastar sin.

It's with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dermot. I first got to know him many years ago, when he, Dominic McEvoy, and their team mate's on the Glanmire Novelty Act kept us highly entertained at various County SCÓR Finals. His timing and general stage presence played no small part in the overall success of the team at that time, which culminated in an appearance in the 1990 All Ireland Final. While victory on that occasion eluded them, there was no honour lost in defeat. Those times were often recalled with affection whenever our paths crossed in recent years. Dermot O Connell was a gentleman evidence of which is more than borne out in these columns. Glanmire will be the poorer, for his passing, but will certainly have been enriched by his presence in the locality. Deepest sympathy to his immediate and extended family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
