Dear Mary, Ronan and Conal. Deepest sympathies to you and all your family on the very sad passing of Des. I had the pleasure and honour of working with Des in the 1980s in Blackrock. What a kind, generous, funny, wonderful man he was, and a fantastic story teller he was too, and all that as well as being a brillant orthodontist. I have such very fond memories of working for him. I was a patient of Des in the early 90s as a teenager and met him on a couple of occasions in Galway in the early 2000s. He was a lovely man, an absolute gentleman and I'm saddened to hear of his passing. Commiserations to the family on his passing.

We used to joke that Des was among those from his old school who did not win a Nobel Prize but he won all the prizes from his humanity, good humour and his care and affection for others.

Hello, for context I'm the latest recipient of the Rory Kavanagh Bursary

I had the pleasure of meeting the family during a presentation night about the lovely Rory. Des seemed like an extraordinary man, even if we spoke for just a few moments.

I can tell this is a family full of love and even though I could not be there in person with the rest of the Italian department; I viewed the funeral live stream and it truly was a beautiful service.

The ability to support in times of trouble is a great strength this family has, it was proven with Rory and it will be proven again with Des.
