Sincere condolences to Rita and the Newman family on the sad loss of Des. Des was a patient of mine when i worked as a dentist in Swords and we had many great chats. My thoughts are with you at this sad time.

I am very sorry to hear of Dessie’s passing. Him and I first met in the late 1960’s when he was stationed in Belmullet for a short time. A great conversationalist, he told us of his time in Grytviken, South Georgia, for a two-year period. He told us of his work there, his Photographic Pastime, and showed us slides and photos taken of the Island and also of the Japanese Whalers and their Whaling Station which they used whenever their boats were working in the South Atlantic. Whilst back in Ireland he continued his photographic hobby around Mullingar and got some great shots of the big Freeze in the early 1960’s.
A very interesting time indeed for a young man.

I was there for his really big day when he and Rita married. A group photo of all the guests exists somewhere. Dessie showed it to me once and whilst showing it he was humming the song from Carmen Jones “beat out that rhythm on a drum” it took me a while to cop-on to why he actually hummed the song. Finally, the penny dropped and it became an “in joke” to both of us.

We met again when I was transferred back to E.I.D.W and of course the first thing he did was to hum that song. When I lodged in Swords, both Des and Rita made me very welcome at their home, and I always enjoyed my visits.
My deepest sympathy goes to Rita and all the family. Des was great craic. May he rest in Peace.

Condolences to all of the Newman family on the loss of a great gentle man. Des was one of the first people I met when I reported to the Met Office, Dublin Airport in 1971 and he was a great help to a very raw recruit as I settled in there. I also played alongside him for many years on the Met football team in the Civil Service league where I marvelled at his skill and fitness. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Condolences to Rita and all the Newman family on Des's passing. We soldiered together in Met Éireann, Dublin Airport for many years and Des was always willing to share his knowledge. In the "olden days" when weather charts were plotted with a black and red pen you could always identify Des's neat handiwork.

Very sad to hear of Des s passing, I knew him from shopping in JCS and meeting him at 11 am mass every Sunday with his wife, he was always so pleasant and loved to stop and have a chat, a real gentleman, our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.
