Desmond (Des) Allen

Only heard today of the sad passing of Des. He fought his heroic battle with cancer and have a copy of his book recounting his life's journey particularly his travels when his illness seemed under control. Got to know him when we in Castleknock LTC hosted 3 Davis Cup ties and his enthusiasm for the game and the occasion were evident. Deepest sympathy to Karen and the rest of Des's family

Des and I worked in Tennis Ireland since 1996.
Since then I have found him to be a true professional deeply committed to the future of tennis in Ireland

I met Des in different countries and we always laughed and joked about tennis. We had a few giggles about life too ! When we caught up at the Tennis Ireland offices for coffee and a chat, I always walked away with a smile on my face. Des was a funny man.

We have so many fond memories of Des, on the golf course, watching him drumming with his great friends, the Racketeers and the many dinner parties we shared with himself and Karen. One particularly unforgettable dinner party was a Middle Eastern theme in which Des had dressed as what can only be described as Lawarence of Arabia meets Donegal Tweed. A look which I believe no-one other than Des could have pulled off with such quiet confidence. But perhaps my fondest memory of Des was a beautiful summers evening in Dunbrody House in Wexford. We were in Wexford for Des’s stag and prior to dinner we gathered in the gardens for a glass of champagne while Des held court. It was a stunning location, surrounded by pals, all celebrating with our wonderful friend in anticipation of his forthcoming wedding.
As Zara and I grieve the enormous loss of a fabulous friend, we take solace from the lines in his essay “The School Bus”. “The leaves whisper and sigh a little and go silent again, like a sleeping woman as a lover moves beside her. It seems as if the fields and trees are resting after producing the bounty of the harvest.”
Rest now Des, the bounty of your harvest will live long in all our memories.
