Dear Eva and Aindriú. We are so sorry to hear this sad news. My Dad always spoke so highly of Des and of all the fun they had together during their time in ATC and sailing together. As kids, we loved to see his yellow triumph spitfire arriving at the house, as it meant some sort of adventure was afoot. Thinking of you during this difficult time.

So sorry we never got to go to funeral as we only heard of such news after the funeral mass today. It was always a real pleasure to meet you and Des in Clonskeagh while out walking your dogs and the wonderful chats we had with you both. Des radiated joy and fun and showed immense kindness especially to our son Sean, who still talks about the fun of visiting a new litter of puppies at Des and Eva's lovely home! Des was a joy to meet, he always had a welcome smile and had plenty to talk about. You always got the impression that he was well travelled, knew how to mingle and kept everyone at their ease. He was the life and soul of the DOP’s, and no doubt his soul was in the DOP’s. So much so he roped Eva into helping with the orchestral concerts and in the later few years when he himself could not take part he was there to support and helped Eva on the door. He was an amazing man. His heart was in music, he was the life and soul of every party and his violin was his companion. It is Heartbreaking to let him go now that he has finished his journey in this world. He made his mark on the people he met, and everyone that knew him will remember him for his kindness. May he rest in peace.

Eva, all my sympathies. Didn't know Des was ill. We missed him after he had to retire from the DOP. His 1st DOP rehearsal-he hadn't time to audition before the concert. A rough area, so I asked him to be bouncer.

We were colleagues in Cork ATC back the years. He seemed to come of age in Cork and was involved in all the sort of things that a young fella should get involved in- making home made beer, chasing young wans, getting to grips with music, those sort of things and more. He was also a mighty colleague and rejoiced in his work at which he excelled.

Eva and Aindriu. So sad to hear of Des’ death. Forty odd years ago, I sailed with Des from Howth to Galica and fell in love with this part of Spain and am now remembering him here in the Rias Baixas. Home is the sailor, home from the sea
