We are so sad to hear about the sudden loss of our dear Amigo Pepe. Our sincerest condoleances to Natalija, Rafael and Matias. May our warmest thoughts and prayers give you lots of strength in these very difficult times. Cherish together the great and sweet memories of him.
More than 20 years ago, in 2004, I had the honour to meet Pepe in Zagreb at the World Congress of Paediatric Surgery (WOFAPS): a truely historic moment: not only because this was the First congress of WOFAPS, not only because this was the beginning of a unique and unforgettable friendship, but also because we met there together Natalija, and i became a truely priviliged witness of how it started. Their love and our friendship withstood the test of time and place. First back to Chile for Paediatric Surgery, then to Croatia, and in between we also had some great times together in Leuven. To land at last as Plastic and ENT surgeons in Ireland, a truely remarkable journey. Pepe was such a great and humble man, a true friend, far away for me but so close. He was certainly a great surgeon and teacher as well, with passion for the Art of Surgery, dedication, perseverance and most of all: kindness. He will be deeply missed in many places all over the world. Our sincerest condoleances also to his parents, his families in Chile and Croatia and to all his friends, in Italy, in Belgium, in Ireland, etc. May he rest in eternal peace. Lots of strength,

I just found out today about the passing of Dr Jose Varas, may he rest in peace 🙏 To his wife and sons i would like to say your husband and Dad was my surgeon just a few weeks ago and i'm devastated at the loss of such a wonderful caring human being. I can't imagine your pain right now but know you will be in my prayers.

First of all, my condolences with the sudden loss of your husband/ father/ best friend and compagnon all the way trough all your challenges. I am still overwhelmed with emotions and it is so hard to realise he was taken so young from all of us. He had so much more plans……

Pépé- José was such a Nice person. You all conquerred so Many challenges with Moving between Chili/ Croatia/ UK and Ireland. José was so happy to finally find a fixed spot in Dublin where he could do the job he loved and he could give his Sons the best of himself . He was so Proud of You Natalija and of course of his Sons, he loved you all incredibly!
All the messages of the last years were always positive and with a twist of humor and i was so happy for all of you!
I’ ll always remember him as a Good friend, loyal, happy, perseverer and a very social person. He was so Nice to everyone who crossed his path and was always greatful for the time spent together a,d the opportunities he got.
He Will be missed!

Pepe, te conocí porque eras un gran amigo de mi esposa. Cuando Marivi hablaba de ti, se ponía feliz, y le brillaban los ojos. Tuvimos la fortuna de tenerte con nosotros en la casa por unos dias en diciembre, tres meses atrás. En esta ocasión te conocimos mejor yo y los ninos. Era imposible no quererte. Alrededor de ti, gracias a tu ser, todo se ponía alegre, entretenido. Y me llamó la atención tu capacidad de crear union con todos, porque a ti las personas te interesaban, eras capaz de contagiarlas con tu alegría, y hacerlos sentir queridos, y si no eran ya tus amigos, se convertían pronto en amigos. Reímos mucho, lo pasamos super bien, y si ahora estamos tan tristes y destruidos por ti y tus familiares, pero nos consolamos un poquito pensando que viviste tan bien la vida, porque no dejaste a nadie atrás, disfrutaste mucho, y regalaste a todos tus alrededores muchos momentos de felicidad. Un abrazo grande grande, come de los tuyos….

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Jose’s sudden passing. Although I had the pleasure of working with Jose for only a few months, in that time I saw how great an individual he was. I was deeply saddened to hear about the very sudden passing of Jose. I worked with him in the Emergency Department at CHI at Temple Street. My sincere condolences to his family whom he adored & also his family & expended family in both Chile & Croatia. He was such a gentleman, always smiling & always in good form & never ever complained about anything. He was so kind to both his patients & the staff & a very hard working, kind & dedicated doctor. He was taken far too young & will be deeply missed. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
