I was very saddened to hear this news about Gretta who passed away on 15th February.

It’s hard to overstate how fortunate we felt growing up next door to Joe and Gretta and their outstanding family. The O’Brien’s truly were ideal neighbours - never far away but also never intrusive. Just ideal. Gretta always had time for a chat if you’d meet her and she’d always leave you in better form for meeting her.

Furthermore, Gretta was always a phone call away if we ever needed her.

Case in point - when my own mother sustained a pretty serious injury at home back in 1991, I distinctly remember the hands on care that Gretta was kind enough to lend that day, before the ambulance arrived. When my father called Gretta, it would have been far easier for her to say she was busy in the shop but Gretta put our family first. As I’ve already said, Gretta was such a dependable neighbour and friend.

In addition to this one act of selflessness, Gretta made countless other kind and unseen gestures over the last 50+ years, that my family were the beneficiaries of, for which I am truly grateful for, may she rest in peace.

I’d like to extend my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Gretta, Joe, Conor, Mary, Orla, and Brian, and to the extended O'Brien and Manning families at this sad time.

Deepest and sincerest condolences to Orla and the entire O'Brien family. I have fond memories of getting a lollipop or an aniseed twist in the chemist's from Mrs O'Brien as a young child. When our parents passed, we learned Mrs O'Brien referred to them as "the lovebirds", a memory we are grateful for, and will cherish and carry forever.

I was very saddened to hear the news that our wonderful neighbour Gretta had passed away. There was always a comfort growing up knowing that we had good neighbours that we could call upon at any time. I have very fond childhood memories of going into O'Brien's house on Christmas morning to show them all the presents that Santa had brought us, we were always greeted with such warmth and friendship. Rest in peace Gretta, you will be missed on Longford Road.

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of our powerhouse of a neighbour, Gretta. Our sincere sympathy goes out to Gretta, Joe, Conor, Mary, Brian, Orla, and the entire O'Brien and Manning families at this difficult time. It is with sincere gratitute that I reflect on how blessed I was to grow up beside Gretta. Every Christmas morning throughout our childhood, myself, Ciara, and Kevin would venture into O'Brien's to share the exciting news that Santy had arrived. Gretta, and the whole family would listen eagerly to us go into all the details of what we got and the mess that Santa left behind! We always felt like we were VIP's heading in there with the warm welcome we received. Gretta always had time to listen when I would update her on my experience living abroad in Germany and America. One time she welcomed Aoife home thinking thinking that she was me, so the running joke was that I was her favorite-I'll take it! May her kind, strong, loving, and inspiring soul rest in peace. Until we meet again.

What wonderful memories of your mother! It will be strange to be home knowing that she isn’t next door. I’m blessed for knowing her and having her many sage examples growing up! She introduced us to crisp sandwiches!
