Sad , sad news. Guy was a kind and charismatic soul.
Godspeed. Joe
It was a great shock to learn of Guy's passing. My sincere condolences to his wife, mother and family. I would be happy to make a donation to his preferred charity in his memory and in memory of all the pleasure he brought me and I'm sure many others through cigars. Rest in Peace.
Deepest condolences to Guy’s family and friends. Huge loss to anyone whose life was touched by him. Relatively unknown in Guy’s circle, he played a huge part in who and where I am today. Graduating in ‘08 I lost my first professional job Christmas of ’08, in the depths of the recession. A teenage immigrant desperate for work and to stay in Ireland I put up an ad in my local shop to do any sort of work. Over all the months that ad was up, I only got one call. That one call is all that mattered because it was from Guy Hancock. He hired me for odd jobs in the Decent Cigar emporium, serving coffee/ wine in the evenings to holding up a sign for the shop on top of Grafton St. to cleaning the floors/ toilets. I fondly recall those days with my family as that was the turning point in my young life. He was the embodiment of class and grace and bestowed tremendous respect towards me at all times. He pushed me to keep trying for a professional job despite the doom and gloom of those days and at the same time introduced me to some great people in his network such as Sabrina Joyce Kemper of Portmarnock and Campbell Walker of Texas/ Dublin among others who found some work I could help them with, which kept me afloat. Guy, I do not have the words to thank you for what you did for me but I pray our paths cross in another life, where I can repay even in some small way the huge debt I owe you! Deeply saddened by your passing my friend, rest in peace.
I have known Guy since I was a girl, despite my youth & gender Guy had complete faith & trust in my abilities & requested that I look after the Decent Cigar a/c. This is how he was with everyone; I personally know a number of individuals that Guy gave a start to in business & put them on the road to success. His confidence brought out the best in people. He also inspired loyalty, friendship & love amongst his friends & work family. To his friends & family who did not get to say goodbye, as hard as it is to comprehend, Guy did not want to say goodbye, he did not want to finalise friendships or supplant great memories with painful ones. He tried to leave us the legacy of a fit, fun, adventurous Guy with a cigar in his hand, a welcome on his lips & a smile on his face. Guy was always humble in his success & unselfish in his friendship & patronage. So too he tried to be in illness, believing he was sparing those he respected & loved the pain of his final journey. To Jess, Trina, & Guys family, we send our love knowing the difficult last few months you shared with Guy, you had the compassion & strength to support Guy & honour his wishes. To his work family, Robert, Gary, Barry & Sylvia, you meant so much to Guy, over & beyond what any work team could, you are his trusted inner circle & he would be so proud of you for continuing the cigar business. We look forward to honoring Guy’s memory when we can all meet up with his extensive friends & family, in the hopefully near future.
Deeply saddened on the passing of Guy. You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.
Guy was an amazing person. As well as having great business acumen, he had a big heart. The Decent Cigar nights were legendary and he was someone who set a high bar and a new standard in Dublin for what a luxury brand should be. He was fun and kind and he will be missed by so many. Condolences to Jessica, his family and friends and all the Bogart gang who are feeling his loss. All my Love during this very sad time, Christine Joyce 💗
