My sincere condolences to Bríd, Aileen, Aisling, Niamh and Donal. I had lovely memories of Ian from our time on family holidays in Barleycove. He was always a great storyteller and above all else a really good man. May he rest in peace.

I only just heard about Ian passing away from his cousin Eleanor Rice here in Luxembourg. I was very sad as I have fond memories of Ian from my days in Penn Chemicals. He was not just a great story teller, but also a very good chemist. What I remember most and have relied on throughout my career was his sage advice when it came to dealing with difficult personnel issues. My sympathies to all his family.

Thinking of many years working with Ian - the fund of stories and knowledge of so many topics , all to the wonderful aroma of cigar and pipe tabacco wafting about us. The always 'so-close' quiz team for which Ian coined the name 'Penn-ultimate' , and provided the most unlikely answers . Ar dheis De go raibh an anam uasal.

Breda, Aileen, Aisling, Niamh, Donal......the list of names whose lives he influenced goes on. Words fail me. Ian was such a character, I shall never forget him. Hugs to you all.

I can't tell you how sad I was to hear of Ian's death, Brid. I know he could have only fought such a long and courageous battle with his illness with the support and wonderful care of you and the family. My deepest sympathy for you all and your extended family and for Don and Jeanette and families on the loss of their beloved brother and uncle.

My mother always had a soft spot for Ian, a "real McAuliffe" as she would say. He was a natural raconteur, and I have fond memories of him on family visits, his great sense of humour and his gift for telling hilarious stories.
