James (Alfie) Chute

Sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved Alfie. A lot of fond and funny memories working for Alf over the years since the early 90's. Will be fondly remembered for many years to come. A big loss to so many. RIP.

We were very saddened to learn of Alf’s passing.

He was a friend, my favorite contractor of all time, and truly someone I loved talking with. Alf had a rare combination of skill, integrity, and warmth — every conversation with him left me laughing and better for it.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Our heartfelt condolences to Joan and the entire family.

So sorry to hear of Alfie's passing. Wonderful memories of Alfie over the years who will now join his two beautiful sisters Angela and Margaret whom I was an acquaintance of in earlier years Angela being a work colleague. So sorry to hear of Alfie‘s passing.
Alfie was a great friend of our family, particularly my Mom and Dad. He gave me my first job in the US back in ‘94, and I always looked forward to meeting him at the Races. For us Alfie was fun, kind, generous and always there to help others.

Alfie Chute was a Listowel man to the backbone. Ironically, he spent most of his life living away from Listowel, but, along with his family, the town was the fulcrum of his life.

A teak-tough, intrepid and often inspired businessman, he built a thriving enterprise in the US, but he always kept building away in Listowel. The fabric of many of the town’s older buildings has been painstakingly restored and put to productive use by Alfie and his son, Tony.

Alfie invested in Listowel people, too – he was a generous man. Many got the start, the push, or the route into jobs in Boston and elsewhere from Alfie.

Alfie mastered the art of being simultaneously both brusque and charming, disarming friend and antagonist alike. Tigerish in discourse, he'd stand his ground, fighting tooth and nail, and regardless of the ferocity of the debate, he would always end it with: “What are you having, yourself?

We want to extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Joan, Tony, Norah, Chas, Jani, and his adored grandchildren, Cathal, Oisín, Jack, Molly, Charlie, and Lucy.

We also extend our sympathies to the wider Chute and Browne clans, his colleagues in construction, and Alfie's innumerable friends in all walks of life in Ireland, the US, and England.

We will miss him and his generation terribly – they really knew what lifelong friendships mean.
