Pat worked with Jim for many years and we found him to be quiet and unassuming - easily hiding his vast knowledge behind his utterly warm and gentlemanly exterior. Through the happy coincidence of having sisters in Cork who frequently holidayed in Barleycove, we visited Jim on a few occasions in the lovely land of Goleen, memories of which include vertiginous rides to his house and line fishing from his boat. In particular, we remember his instructions for our first visit : “Go into the phone box in Goleen and ask for Goleen 1 and you will get a warm welcome and all the information you need”. This proved to be very true since the phone box was just outside his parents’ shop which was also the exchange. Jim was such a lovely gift to humanity that we are sure that he carries with him the secret knowledge of how to ring “Goleen 1” in order to guarantee for himself a loving and totally deserved welcome. His absence must leave an enormous gap in the lives of all his family and friends and we offer them our most sincere condolences.
So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Friends of Mary and Jim in Belfast during their teaching years, and curiously, summer holiday beneficiaries of a family owned (Imelda's sister's) holiday home at Barleycove Beach in the nineties. Unfortunately, as sometimes is the way of the world, we had lost touch, but we still often thought and talked of our friends way down in Goleen. Condolences to all the family. Imelda & Drennan McBride, Belfast (and son John who, aged 6 years, out in the bay under the guidance of Captain Jim O'Meara on the 'Nora Barnacle caught 6 mackerel on the one line ... a forever memory). 💔

Dear Mary, Ciarán, Aisling and Oisín I am so saddened to hear about Jim's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I will always remember the good times especially laughs of which there were many we had in West Cork! The climb on the twisty road to your house on the mountain, the wonderful dinner party (We say grace in this house!), and the characterful Lada with the dodgy exhaust pipe that made it sound like a V8 engine! Jim, like all the O'Meara family welcomed me (a simple idiot from South London) with warmth, grace and good cheer. God speed Jim.
