I was saddened to hear of Jimmy’s passing, and I am sorry for his family’s loss.

I met Jimmy in 1980 when I was a young, confused soldier and new dad, which was a good thing for me, because Jimmy was an exemplar of what a good senior NCO should be, while at the same time being a decent and compassionate human being. Always firm, but never harsh, he was disciplined, and yet I often heard him laugh uproariously, and frequently at himself. An even handed man, I always admired how he treated all he encountered respectfully and with dignity, regardless of rank. He was a just man. A gifted organiser, Jim was able to draw the best out of those he worked with, his sleeves rolled up first, always leading from the front. I remember that Jimmy was constantly encouraging lads, always, and that I benefited from his guidance - I still do. Jimmy moved with ease and grace among the lads, always got the job done with no non-sense, but without unnecessary effort.

I often reflect on the ordinary heroes that surround us everyday, especially the ones who have had an impact on my life, men who are always willing to lead from the front, men like Jimmy Barrett.

I am glad, honoured and proud to have met Jimmy.
