Sincere sympathy to all of Jim’s family on his passing. He was a fantastic, larger than life character and an exceptionally talented piano teacher. He was a huge inspiration to me over the years that he taught me. I have many fond memories of his piano pupils loaded into his car to go to the RIAM exams, followed by trips to McDonald’s in Grafton St. (a huge treat at the time) and other Dublin attractions. He will be fondly remembered by all of his pupils and he has left a great legacy behind him.
I was very sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He will be fondly remembered as a kind and valued neighbour in Hanover for many years. My sincere condolences to Éamonn, Éilíse, and Róisín, and all who loved him at this sad time.
Sincere sympathy to Jim's family on his recent passing. He was a larger than life character and his arrival in Shillelagh with a car full of pupils heralded much merriment and smiles from teachers and pupils alike.
We were privileged to have known him and we're glad he passed our way.Suaimhneas na siorrai ort I gconai.
Our sincere sympathies to all the O’Sullivan family on the passing of Jim. We have very fond memories of Jim as our piano teacher over the years. May he rest in peace.
Condolences to Éamonn, Éilíse, Róisín, his 5 grandchildren and his siblings John, Pat, Terry and Mairead (without a fada) whom I met at his farewell gathering. I was one of a group who were in college with Jim from 1968-1975 with the final two years at Marino Teacher Training College. Jim was a friend you’d never forget as he was so talented in so many fields especially at music where he excelled. I remember him as Principal later on in Kilquiggan when he lived in Carlow. Unfortunately although I tried to track his whereabouts after leaving Kilquiggan, I found no trace until I received the sad news of his untimely death. I’m so sorry not to have had contact with him since he left Carlow and the same goes for all his college friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam ceolmhar. Paul Redmond

Deepest sympathy to Jim’s family on his death.
He was enthusiastically devoted to the education of his pupils especially in the area of music.
Leaba í measc na naomh go raibh aige .
Sincere sympathy to all the O Sullivan family on the death of Jim. May he rest in peace. I have beautiful memories of teaching with him in Kilquiggan as “the Monday and Wednesday teacher!” I always left his school with a smile on my face and an interesting viewpoint to ponder on - using one of the multicoloured hats. Rest in peace Jim.
Jim (James) taught me piano from a very young age when he would arrive at my house in black leather on his motorbike. He made it great fun and nurtured talent amongst many of his students in a way that other person could have. I especially remember the trophy he presented to the Arklow Music Festival for local students when we were often deflated at being beaten by “the Dublin students”. He was unique. How fortunate was I to have met and be taught by such a man.
It's with sadness we hear of Jim's passing..to say he was one of a kind is true .. Thinking of Eamonn,Èilise & Ròisìn Jim's son in law , daughter in law & Grandchildren , he's extended family & wide circle of friends 🙏 RIP
A Master Like No Other
A master like no other—
do you remember?
No Irish, no religion, no P.E.,
no renaming in maths:
you borrow, you pay back.
And above all—no inspectors,
No need for strict directors.

Do you remember Friday lunch,
what he did with the bunch?
No more sitting on a hard old bench.
He would shout,
“ You take the Byrnes,
and I will get the rest,”
and home we all went.
Do you remember the competitions we entered,
The winning, the singing,
the tokens we gathered,
the flowers we planted,
the cherry blossom that bloomed,
reminding us to remember,
The untimely passing of beautiful Miss Casey,
God rest her.

The trips in the trailer,
to the castle, to Shillelagh School.
The pride in our achievements,
the joy on the children’s beautiful faces.
The hats we had to wear—
the white, the yellow, the black, and the blue—
to get us thinking
what was false and what was true.
Lateral thinking—
the best lesson to do,
Edward de Bono said so too.

I remember the two-teacher school,
and the master like no other.
Do I remember?
How could I ever forget?
Thank you, Jim.
You were one of the best.
God rest you.

Sincere condolences to all his Family.

He was a good friend to us and teacher to our children. May Jim rest in eternal peace.
So sorry hearing this news, Sir, was one of a kind. So many great memories in Kilquiggan NS. Winning all Ireland gardening competitions in memory of Ms Casey, bringing us to joke shops in Dublin when collecting our awards, school tour to the Isle of Man, taking out the roll book for previous months and ticking names off as the inspector would walk up the steps while someone was sent out as a diversion. He left a lasting legacy with so many.
Thinking of Eammon, Eilise, Roisin and all the family at this sad time. RIP Sir xx
My deepest sympathy to the O’Sullivan family on the passing of Jim. I knew Jim in Tinahely and Carlow.

Rest in peace
The Master was something else.

I remember gardening outside, potting inside, and being brought home in the back of a trailer because the weather was simply too good to stay in school.

Monopoly, Yahtzee, Gin Rummy, and chess. School inspectors being told—in no uncertain terms—that they weren’t welcome. No Irish, no religion classes. Winning All-Ireland gardening and singing competitions—not bad for a tiny, rural two-teacher school.

None of this was accidental. There was method in it all: his championing of lateral thinking and Edward de Bono, his belief in learning beyond convention.

I remember too when the beautiful Ms Casey died, and the cherry tree he planted for her, so that we could continue to remember.

He had a profound influence on us all. My deepest condolences to everyone who loved him.
