So sorry to hear of Jim's death. As an Experimental Physics undergraduate, I have great memories of Jim as a lecturer and in charge of 3rd year labs and also for his work in 4th year labs. He always emphasised the Experimental in Experimental Physics! A giant of a man and a great character? Sincere Sympathy to Jim's family friends and former colleagues in UCG. May Jim Rest in Peace.

Jim was always a joy to meet walking his beloved dog in Renville Park ór around the village. He was a great man for the chat and always so interesting to listen to.

To dad - As a child, I remember the world of the Physics Department as a most mystical place and later had the honour of attending your lectures and Labs. Thank you for introducing me to Z80's, 6800's, 6502's - I figured out how to start that Exidy Sorcerer on my own. I blew the diode in my finals and was too embarrassed to ask for a replacement !! Mom and myself helped you with the 3rd year lab manual over many years and revisions and iterations. I remember you in the sitting room correcting the summer scripts and later the autumn scripts. We got to the top of Eagles Rock in the Burren and met some wild goats. Walking through a field you scooped me up and we ran for our lives when you spotted a bull !! I thought it was a game but you spotted the danger. You believed in helping others and those less fortunate. You witnessed things we never knew about until much later in our lives and it weighed on your heart. We hugged when mom parted and we were there with you right up to the end. We love you and you are always in our hearts.

I’m sorry to hear of Jim’s passing, may he rest in peace. Sincere condolences to Jim’s family. I have fond memories of him as an undergrad in Physics. He was a wonderful lecturer and very supportive during my time at UCG. Thinking of you all at this sad time.

God jim was the first person who came up to me days after my sons funeral and welcomed me to the rinville graveyard group . .. he said my sons grave was beautiful lined with roses before burial .
From there we became good friends ..we met on dog walks n in the graveyard.. he was part of the village himself n his dogs. He had so many friends ..rip in peace jim .

Jim was a colleague during my first few years as a lecturer in Physics, and I remember him as an extremely kind, friendly and entertaining person, who was deeply student-centred. My sincere sympathy to his children, to whom he was clearly devoted, together with his late wife (and his dogs).

So sad to read of Jim's passing. I have great memories of my time as an undergraduate student, when he was one of my lecturers. Sincere condolences to all those in his wider family and circle of close friends.

We used to meet Jim almost every day, when we walked our dogs in Renville park. He knew all of the dogs by name.
He adored his dog (named Dog)
He was such a character and always had the chat.

Jim and Joy were good friends to myself, Mary and our boys when we came to live in Ireland in 1981.
