Sincere sympathies to the Somers family on the very sad loss of both Jimmy and Alice recently. Jimmy was a great colleague and friend of my father Frank and uncle Ger in ITGWU/SIPTU - they campaigned together over many years in the Union and Labour Party. Many a song was sung and many a story was told! Jimmy was totally committed to the cause, and a gentleman to his core - may his he rest in peace with those gone before him. Dear Jimmy, Derek and Amanda. I was so sorry to hear about your father Jimmy, and your mother Alice. I did not know until Ivana told me last Friday when we were out canvassing. Certainly I would have attended the funeral. I know how fond they were of David and I remember how Jimmy, in particular, looked after him when he was struggling. My mother, Petria, never forgot them and how they cared about him. I was so pained when Ivana told me. I send you my deepest sympathies.

Jimmy served with distinction as a member of the Labour Court following his distinguished career in the Trade Union movement. He is remembered as a wise, fair and decent colleague with a kind word and a smile at all times. I have known Jimmy since the '70s and always found him constructive and helpful in finding fair solutions to difficult issues. He was a man of honesty and integrity and represented his members diligently. I also had the pleasure of meeting Alice on several occasions over the years at official functions etc and found her to be a lovely dignified lady. My very sincere condolences to the Somers family at this very sad time.

Dear Jimmy Jnr & all the Somers family. Your father Jimmy Snr was a magnificant advocate for all. It is such a pity today in National Politics that we do not have more like Jimmy Somers Snr who had great courage and dignity in his work. As for Jimmy Jnr whom I had the great pleasure of getting to know while you were doing your BA and I my BSC at NUI Maynooth. What craic Jimmy, me, the vince, tunney and the downes had just to.mention.a few. I recall fondly one time at Jimmy"s house in clontarf the.mantle place had morw photographs of jimmy snr with world politicans it was like the oval office.😄

Please accept our sincere condolences on Jim's passing. A most beautiful mass in every respect, for a most wonderful man, music, singing and spoken word. His love of the language was well reflected in the music. His respect and feelings for the underprivileged was always to the fore. A real Irish 'Joe Hill'.
Jim was a true Christian, never losing the common touch. We always remember on more than one occasion meeting Alice in Arnotts and on enquiring how Jim was being told he's over in Moore street getting the fruit. Please stay strong for each other and stay safe.

I have so many fond memories of Jimmy (with Alice, Sheila and Mrs. McGrath) visiting us in Arklow, especially when Cissie was staying with us. The news of the demise of Jimmy Sommers has come as a great shock to me, particularly so soon following the departure from this life of his beloved wife, Alice. They were so unified in this life and now united in eternity. I was privileged to have served the cause of justice, fairness and equality with Jimmy Sommers in the Trade Union movement and also as a member of the Labour Party. The very essence of his being was decency and honesty. Never offensive or brash, but quiet and effective in his demeanour and well respected by those with whom he negotiated, for his dedication in pursuing better rights and conditions for the working class. Socially, it was also a delight to share times with himself and Alice over the years and their company and friendship shall always be remembered.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of a dear friend. Jimmy was the embodiment of everything I considered to be the Labour Party. His trade union and political skills were immense. I always looked forward to meeting Jimmy and the many, many phone calls we had down the years. I always respected and welcomed his advice and was thankful for his encouragement and support.
