Farewell Captain Joe.
In the long and distinguished history of Clonliffe Harriers you have left a legacy that very few WASPs can equal.
11 Inter Club CC Championships and 10 T&F team titles is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the representation of Clonliffe athletes at national and international level, both senior and underage.
Your production of county, regional and national champions, both team and individual, is a testimony to your passion and commitment to the club which you served as captain with such distinction over the past 18 years.
The appreciations written here are a true reflection of the high esteem in which you were, and always will be held, not only by those you coached, but by all other members of the club you loved so well.
Gladys and family, when it comes to describing Joe, one word springs to mind.....Irreplaceable.
— Dominic Branigan

My deepest sympathies Gladys and to the whole Cooper family. Joe was my first coach and he ignited a lifelong love for sport in me. He thought me the values of work ethic and commitment to a goal. He talked me through my first cross country season when I was struggling telling me: “you’ll beat all these fellas when the track season comes round Tobin, it’s all money in the bank!” Then when I did start winning on the track he’d tell me: “don’t get too cocky now Tobin!” And that was Joe to me, always knew what to say whether you needed picking up or your feet kept on the ground. But I’ll always be grateful for the stabilising effect he had on me and the direction he gave me, something that goes beyond the boundaries of athletics and into how you live your every day life. But what I’ll remember most is the personality, one of laughter and fun that would brighten up any room, track or muddy hillside!

When I think of the many young peoples lives just like mine that Joe will have enhanced it makes you appreciate the value he brought to the whole community. Rest in peace Joe. And thank you.
— Daniel Tobin
