May you rest in peace Joe, and sleep with the Angels. An out and out gentleman and human being. As a teacher, there were none better than you. You gave the student respect first and drew them in with your love of teaching and they respected you back because of this. Your ability to converse with them at a level that was easy and open, polite and respectful, pose questions and respect the answer received ( even if wasn't what you wished for) was a skill rarely found in the 80s.

He inspired in me a great love of poetry and drama. I think of him every time I get on stage or read a script . Thank you Joe - may you rest in eternal peace.

Joe was a great teacher and I always enjoyed his English class. He was a good and decent man who brought out the best in his students.

I was so lucky to have him for Leaving Cert English in the late seventies and he actually asked me if he could keep my homework an imaginative composition a drawing and a watercolour on the works of Kavanagh. Not only that but he met me with my daughter thirty years later and told her he had my pictures at his house.He was a wonderful teacher, a gentleman and I hope God takes a great liking to him.

I first met Joe when my sister and Richard became a couple around 25 years ago. He was always exceptionally kind, warm and caring, and would do anything to help. I will miss his steady and calming presence.
