I have fond memories of guitar practicing late into the evenings when John stayed with us in Bewerley. I was only 7 or 8. Love and condolences to Maria and all Johns family.

I am very saddened to hear the sudden passing of John a dear friend and a wonderful person who had extraordinary talent in art . Goodbye my old school mate. During our salad days at St Michaels Jesuit College, Leeds, we discovered the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and I will cherish those memories. John's love of the Dales can only be matched by his love of Ireland his adopted country. Blessed with many talents, which he used well, John was a decent man and a true friend. The world is a poorer place without him. God bless Marie, Kiera and Holly during these difficult times. Rest in eternal peace John. You will missed by all whose lives you enriched.

Maria, for once in my life, I'm lost for words. I can't even begin to imagine what you're going through right now. Despite knowing John since we were at college, you and I never met. Over the years, we only ever spoke briefly on the phone when I would call to speak to John. He never stopped trying to persuade Fran and I to visit you both in Ireland, but the distances were always too great, or unforeseen circumstances disrupted our plans. There's nothing that anyone can say to ease the pain you're feeling right now, but you are in my thoughts and I promise we will meet one day. John is still with us in so many ways, and he always will be. Love from Paul, John's friend.

Our deepest condolences on the sudden death of John; we’re so very sorry for your great loss.

John was kind, charismatic, and creative. He loved Maria, and his daughters, and his family wholeheartedly. And his friends were the family he chose for himself, they were so important to him.

John’s kindness when our lovely Dara died in 2017 was immense. He organised a stunning and rousing memorial concert in Cootehill. And he painted a poignantly beautiful image of a piper looking out across Blacksod Bay. He went above and beyond. And his selfless work on both counts brought great comfort to those left behind. Now, whenever we look at John’s painting and we think of Dara, we will also think with affection and gratitude, of John.

His work as an artist and musician is only matched by his love of nature and his depiction of it. I had the privilege of seeing him stretch out his hand through the kitchen window and see little robins alight on his hand to feed..." Happy the man whose wish and care a few paternal acres bound, content to breathe his native air in his own ground".
