So sorry to hear of the sad loss of John, a larger than life figure and a true legend.
John and my dad Jim won bridge tournaments all over Ireland together. John would often stay over in our house for weekend tournaments in the Drogheda area and there would be great late night debates between John and Dad over bidding, contracts, how a hand should or should not be played and gripes about the conservative play of people that wouldn't bid up against them
There would be further great debates about horses, non-triers, strokes pulled by trainers, good and bad rides by jockeys and what would or wouldn't win at Cheltenham .
Eamonn Coughlan and golf were other regular great topics of debate. I always looked forward to John's visits and reading his racing column in the Independent and Herald.
John and Anne called every Christmas with their family Geraldine, Robert and Elaine and would entertain us with hilarious stories and yarns late into the night the best of all being the motorbike that conked out and left them stranded at Blakes Cross only for it to start first time when John returned the next day!
We would meet and picnic at the last fence for the Irish Grandnational at Fairyhouse every year with John coming back from the ring with updates on gambles, more bad rides and non triers. They were great times.
My deepest sympathies to Anne, Geraldine, Robert and Elaine and all extended family.
