My deepest condolences to Catherine, Eva and Chloe and John’s wider family. There are no words to console such a loss. I knew John many years ago in the Mater Hospital. I remember John as a kind, intelligent person with a wonderful wit. I also remember him shifting most of his experiments and focus of his postdoctoral research to be in UCD so he could spend more time with Catherine, the girl that he was so clearly falling in love in with. May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to the Meave, Gráinne and the Crean family on the sad passing of John. We went to school together, and though I haven't seen John for many years, I still have very clear memories of a clever and witty schoolmate. May he rest in peace.

At the lowest ebb of my PhD, John offered support to my project, for no reason other than he saw someone who was badly struggling and needed help. For John it was nothing; just one of the many acts of kindness he performed without a second thought. For me it was transformative, and I will be forever grateful to him for his mentorship, inspiration and friendship.
Catherine, Eva and Chloe, my sincere condolences to you on John’s passing. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

My most sincere condolences to Catherine, Eva, Cole and the Crean family in the untimely passing of John. He was a wonderful supervisor and a pleasure to work with. His patience, kindness and understanding knew no bounds. May he rest in peace
John was truly one of the most inspiring people I have had the pleasure to know, every conversation was beaming with love, compassion, and curiosity. He never stuttered, when it came to offering me help/advice, whether it was asked or not, he was always just trying to get people to their best. John played a huge role in shaping how I see pharmacology, but more importantly he instilled in me a passion, and human centric approach to the abstract. John never failed to see people's potential, and to push them to reaching it, and for that I will be forever be grateful.
My deepest thoughts and condolences are with Catherine, Eva, Chloe, and every single one of John's many friends; such a bright, amazing individual will leave a huge hole, not just in the lives closest to him, but in the lives of everyone who was so lucky to be impacted by his brilliance.

This was such a shock to us, John was a corner stone of the community at UCD Conway and having known him for decades the loss is all the more moving...
Always one to posit a question on whatever the topic, science, sport, music, beer! Guaranteed a fun time whenever we met. One of the constants too, he was always to be found for a coffee and a chat. Generous and helpful to everyone, with no pomp, comfortable in conversation. Great wit and intellect.
Will be deeply missed, our heartfelt condolences for everyone feeling that sadness. John will be remembered always.

I attended UCD and had the pleasure of listening to John as a professor for my neuroscience and biochemistry classes. He was an engaging teacher and kind man who loved his subject and students. Praying for his soul and family. Requiescat in Pace.
My deepest condolences to John's family and friends. I fondly remember his lectures during my time in UCD; he was an incredible scientist with great enthusiasm for his work. Once during an exam in the RDS, I went completely blank and began to panic... he came to my desk and helped me to sketch out a molecular pathway to get me started (and I passed!). I really appreciated his kindness that day and it is a reflection of the kind of man he was. May he rest in peace.
Dear John, I will always remember your gentle smile and friendliness.

To say John was an incredible man would be an understatement. He instilled his love of science in everyone he met. His enthusiasm was so infectious. He made me fall in love with organoids and Radiohead, a combination I never knew went so well together until I met John.
Words will never be able to express how much he will be missed dearly by us all. He shaped so many lives with his passion and that influence will live on in all of us lucky enough to have known him.

I was devastated to hear about John's passing. I will always remember our conversations about his love of Portugal and his trips to the country with his family. He was an amazing colleague that always brought a joyful mood to the undergrad labs that he was teaching. He will be very missed.
My Condolences to John's family and friends.
My Condolences to John's family and friends.
I was an undergraduate biochemistry student taught by John in UCD in the early to mid 2010s. He was one of the best and most passionate lecturers during my time there and I still remember those lectures fondly. He introduced himself with a splash showing a picture of himself pre-PhD with long flowing hair and post-PhD with decidedly less hair to emphasise the difficulty of doing a PhD. It was this element of fun and passion that really helped sculpt my own passion in science and pursue a career in research. Ireland has lost a fantastic teacher, scientist, and man but he has most certainly made a lasting impact on many young scientists in his too short life. Sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends on this tragic loss.
So sorry for your sudden and unexpected loss Catherine, Eva, Chloe, Maeve,Gráinne, David, and Conor, and John's extended family. John will be missed by students and staff in UCD. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal agus dílis.

Deepest condolences to family, friends and colleges of John Crean. He was an inspiration in his work and dedication to teaching in UCD and will be missed by many and it was a pleasure to experience his enthusiastic teaching.
My deepest condolences to the family and friends of John Crean. I was fortunate enough to have him as a lecturer last year and he was always such a joy and inspiration. I met with him once to discuss his lab work more in depth and his passion was so infectious. I can confidently say I left that conversation with a new perspective on science and what it could achieve. Not only that, but he couldn't help but mention his family, friends and colleagues throughout our whole chat. It was clear he had a great appreciation for those around him. His contributions to science and the university, as well as his positivity and its impact on those around him will certainly be missed. May he rest in peace.
