My most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of John. I am saddened to hear of his passing.
John's knowledge of livestock and farming in Ireland were of great help to me during my time in Manch back in the nineties. I remember him as a very curious man and I enjoyed discussing all sorts of topics with him - not just farming. I hope they have cows where you are now.

Dear John, So sad that you have left us all too soon.I will miss all the wonderful chats I had with you. You were a fountain of historical knowledge and so interesting the many late nights / early mornings spent in your company.You were a very genuine and upright person and may you be rewarded for your hard labours and decency. Our sincere sympathy to Marie and family and to the extended Daly family on the sad passing of John. He will be sorely missed not alone by his own grieving family and local community but by a wide circle of friends throughout the west Cork area. John had a great love of family, farming and the GAA and, as he liked to point out, was a loyal supporter of the pro-treaty party all his life. In fact, the last time we saw John was at the unveiling of the new Michael Collins statue in the Grand Parade a few weeks ago and he seemed in fine fettle. But life can throw up many contradictions.
John had a tremendous knowledge and love of local history and was very well read in wider general history. I would ring him seeking clarification on some historical fact and very often would come away with an earful of admonition for my inability to see the wider picture!!! But that was essentially John. So honest, forthright and helpful in everything he did.
