Very sad to learn of the death of John, a friend of many years,a well-rounded man,philosopher,wonderful teacher, a practical man with many interests, always interesting to meet on my walks. He and his family raised awareness of the value of fitness and put Longford on the map in years past. His many past pupils will always remember him with love and respect. My sincere sympathy to Bridie and family and to the many who feel his loss. May he rest in peace.

Sorrowful news indeed to hear of John’s peaceful passing. Despite “great innings” and a life well lived his moment of departure is a time of poignancy and reflection. An honourable man always cheerful and charismatic. Helpful and hopeful if you wanted any assistance, all you had to do was “say but the word”. A beloved and faithful spouse to Bridie, an adored father, a grandfather and great-grandfather full of wiseness, wisdom love and affection for all of you. What a rich legacy he has bequeathed to all of you and all of us who were blessed to know him.
John was affectionately known as “The Minister for Education” and he spared no effort in that regard. A Teacher and tutor he was always interested in what the pupil “didn’t know” rather than “what they thought they knew” and leading them patiently to a sense of right from wrong. He believed in the old adage “mistakes are only mistakes if you don’t learn from them”. He enjoyed his retirement blissfully, keeping himself “as busy as a bee” attending to his hives which were a haven to him. It may not have been “manuka” but it certainly was the genuine article. With his “Green fingered “ skills and his generosity you would never be short of organic produce. Blessed we were to know him.
