He made a wonderful contribution to improving the lot of his fellow workers as did many members of the wider Costello Family which as a retired TD and Councillor for the Tallaght area and beyond I saw at first hand.

Deeply saddened to hear of the untimely passing of my dear friend John. John was a great friend to me while i worked in South Dublin County Council. Even after his retirement myself John, Adrienne and Mark would meet regularly for tea and a catch up in the Square. A very kind, loyal and supportive friend. I knew John more than 40 years and and worked with him 1995 to 2012. A great man to have on your side when needed. Condolences to all his family.

I was saddened to learn of John's passing. John worked with me in Tallaght and Ballymount Road Maintenance depots from 1994-2004, John was the shop steward so we had many the altercation, mostly I couldn't win as john was considered invaluable to The Personnel Department in dealing with The Bin Men who could be difficult to handle. I recall at the end of my tenure engaging a contractor to carry out essential and necessary work, this was u derstandably met with total opposition, it was suggested by an Overseer that I talk to Costello which I did problem solved. John's brothers Liam Rip and Tommy (a great guy so dedicatied) also worked with me in Drainage Maintenance Deansrath (1992-1994).
My Sympathies to John's wife family brothers sisters work colleagues and many friends.

John was an extraordinary friend and activist in the trade union movment. Where he served his colleagues in South Dublin Co Council and the former Dublin Co Council and beyond in many counties.
John was a Senior Shop Steward with the former ITGWU. And then moved on to a Senior role within the formation of SIPTU.
Where he accompanied me to many Conferences all over Ireland
John was so experienced in industrial relations I was so glad to have John with me on many negotiations and indeed on many trade disputes in various countries outside Dublin & within.
John’s wealth of experience will be a terrible loss to the Trade Union Movement.
I know I will never forget him as a friend and colleagues .
John is now with the Great Jim Larkin and the great leaders of their time
