I first met John when I was a medical student in NMH, then I was his intern in SVH.When I became involved in RCPI I encountered him again and he was always so insightful about the topics of the day in medicine, medical education, professionalism, society. Moreover, he was great company, insightful, supportive, engaged, and such an enjoyable positive person. College events will not be the same without the happy expectation that I’ll sit and talk with him. My warmest thoughts to his family on the passing of a wonderful man.

Just heard about Dr Murphy's passing
my sincere condolences to his family, I presented to Dr Murphy when I was only 22 with a serious medical problem and from day one he made me feel I was in very safe hands, later on he went on to deliver my Children and was my gynecologist till he retired, a gentlemen and a very genuine person. May he rest in peace now 🙏

I was so saddened to hear of Johns passing last week. I was a student in the Coombe Hospital when I met him first many years ago , he was such a kind and devoted doctor and a wonderful teacher -

I worked at the NMH Holles Street and i subsequently became a patient of Dr Murphy over 20 years in total and I could not of asked for a kinder, more gentle, knowledgeable,and supportive doctor. He was ahead of his time and simply the best. I will always be grateful to him and remember him fondly. Condolences to his family. RIP

He was guaranteed to be good humoured, polite and easy to work with and I was always impressed by his gentle way and the care and respect which he afforded to each patient. John was a warm, friendly, intelligent and loving man. He was a great obstetrician, who was respected internationally. As a Professor of Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine in Birmingham, our paths crossed many times both, professionally and socially. He always spoke warmly of his time in Birmingham (as a younger man) and his many visits since that time.

When I heard that John F had died I was overtaken by sadness as I had known John for more than 80 years. We had first met at my birthday party in April 1945 at a time that World War 2 was coming to an end. After that we lead parallel lives. We went to Gonzaga together, we went to UCD to study medicine together and after qualification we both took up the same specialty. As we lived in different countries we saw less of each other in later years but more recently we provided help and support to each other when we were toiling at Bahrain and Penang medical colleges on behalf of RCSI and UCD.
John F had so many admirable qualities. A sincere and dedicated pillar of his family, a kind and generous doctor who was loved and esteemed by both patients and colleagues. Some people forget his academic achievements for as well as being a relaxed and gifted teacher he was also a serious academic who made a big contribution to the understanding of HPV, CIN and the prevention of cervical carcinoma.

Ann, you and your family should be proud of your love and support for John throughout your lives together but especially in his final days. Also you can be proud of the funeral mass service in Rathgar. Tom’s tribute to his father was superb.

John F and I were members of a small group of old Gonzaga boys ( class of “61 ) who meet on the last Wednesday of each month. John will be with us next week and in the months to come.

Dear Anne: I was sad to hear of John's passing. My memories of him go way back to our young boyhood in the same class at Gonzaga. I saw him most recently about five years ago when we had a long and enjoyable coffee together near Ranelagh during one of my visits home. As you may know, I live in Seattle, so visits to Ireland are few. Otherwise I would have looked him up more recently. He was such a nice and decent man. All my sympathy to you and your family.
