A great Hoop supporter, in my time I really appreciated your help and advice, may you rest in peace, thank you
Deepest sympathies to all of John's family on his sad parting . He is very fondly remembered by everyone in St. Brigid's Primary School, The Coombe where he worked for many years as caretaker, as well as by all the Holy Faith sisters, The Coombe. We remember him for his kindness, his good humour, his generosity in every way, his community work particularly with Carmens Hall, his City Council work, his campaigning work ( Wood Quay, just one example) and his daily cycling and sea swimming. A wonderful man, a very sad loss for the Liberties.I look forward to the Daniel O' Connell stlye memorial! Rest in peace John.
Copy of email i sent to the members of the Board of The City of Dublin Skin and Cancer Hospital Charity today:
John was a long time dedicated member of our Board. He loved the fact that the hospital was still in existence in the city centre. Indeed himself, Jim Lovegrove and myself were the three members of the Board who fought to keep the Hospital open and must have been a great annoyance to Matt O’Brien then Chairman as we tried everything to stop the closure. One of my last memories of John at a Board Meeting in the new Board Room in UCD, while discussing all the new items that the Charity was undertaking, was when I turned to him and said “John it is good to know that we were wrong in trying to stop the closing of the hospital “ we smiled and he agreed with me.
I remember John being a great support to me when I was Chairman during difficult times and he often came up to me after a meeting to give encouragement and agreement with decisions. Apart from his love of Dublin City and especially The Liberties area he was a man who cycled all year for his swim in the 40ft. I am so glad that the article by Alan O’Keeffe yesterday brought such importance to a funeral where because he died from the virus had nobody in attendance in person but I am sure it was a huge attendance in the hearts of many. He will have no trouble with St Peter as he was a man of great integrity.

Sincere condolences to all the Gallager family on the untimely passing of John.
Having grown up in the liberties many years ago John was a good friend of mine.
I would have palled with his brother Peter and knew all the family from the Coombe.

So sad to hear Mr Gallagher has passed away. I worked in St Nicholas of Myra Community Centre Francis St in 1990s and Mr Gallagher hired me. We researched the Liberties and he was such a lovely, kind genuine man. Will always remember him RIP
He's a sad a loss to Dublin but especially The Liberties. I grew up there and throughout my school days he was a feature of the fight to save our city. One of the nuns who taught us was a staunch historian and environmentalist and insisted we go on the Wood Quay march. He gave us pride in our home when others looked down on us. God bless John and deepest sympathy to your family. We won't see his like again.
To Mick and the Gallagher Family: Deepest Sympathy, to all the Family , our thoughts are very much with you , at this time.
So sorry to hear of John’s passing - a lovely, lovely man; committed to his community and to social justice.

So sorry to hear of John's death. He was a gentleman, v good humoured, & very well informed about current affairs, a staunch supporter of The Liberties and The Coombe area. I was a young teacher in St. Brigid's NS in 1977 when I first met John. His favourite phrase when he met you was "There you are". He'd have a lovely smile for you, and looked just as happy as he is, in his picture above! Rest gently John.
To the Gallagher family,

In memory of the mighty John Gallagher who spoke with and for his community for so many years. John made a fantastic contribution to the campaign for St Brigid's new school back in 2003/2004. Rest in peace John, you'll be missed.
Dear Michael and Gallagher family,
Our deepest sympathy to you all on John's passing. Several of the sisters who are in the community here now were also in the old house as young nuns and we have been sharing stories of the treasure and inspiration John was to Holy Faith - in the school, in the convent and with Sr. Laurentia in the parish centre. Our hearts are full of thanksgiving for him and we have a candle in our chapel since we heard the news which is lit during our prayer times. Blessings to you all and an assurance of continued remembrance for John, from Anna, Colette, Hilda, Jacinta and Jane.

I am deeply saddened by John’s going and will forever remember the kindness, grace and respect that he extended to everyone he encountered in his daily life in the Liberties and beyond. John was very many wonderful things. He had an extraordinary ability to make people feel the good in the world – something he did in both word and deed. He was courageous, deeply cultured and gifted with great independence and richness of mind. The years during which he presided over the Nicholas of Myra Centre were a glimpse of a different, infinitely better and more just world. John was also a wonderful and very wise friend who delighted in the many beautiful things that he found in this world. He often spoke of ‘the rebel Liberties’ – I will remember John as the kindest and most caring of rebels. Deepest sympathies to Mick and the Gallagher Family.

So sad to hear of John’s passing.
John was simply a remarkable man. I met John when I helped him with the Dublin Inner City Games. In 20 years he never missed a meeting or an event. His dedication to the young people of the Liberties and of Dublin was without equal. John would organise any event from debating to disco dancing , draughts to football that would be an outlet and get children together. His favourite was the majorettes and he loved to see them in the Dublin St Patricks Day parade.
How John had the time to do all he did was unbelievable , that is until you got to know the man and his dedication to helping other people, nothing was ever too difficult.
No man ever done so much for so many without wanting any reward or recognition.
Rest in peace John, but if I know you, you will already be up there, still finding a way to help people.

Sincere condolences on the death of John, worked closely with my mother Phyllis in the Liberties Association and was very persuasive in getting me to sign up to various voluntary work from an early age! Fondly remembered by all.
The FLAC team is so sorry to hear of the passing of John Gallagher RIP. John was a great friend to FLAC, particularly when we were trying to set up FLAC clinics in the liberties in the 1980s. May he rest in peace.
So sad to learn of John passing. John was a social activist long before the term was coined. He was a job creator and an educator; raising peoples awareness to the great heritage that was all around them in the Liberties. He was also believed that the working classes had the same right to realise their potential as their so-called betters from the more wealthier districts of Dublin and he devoted his life in trying to achieve that purpose. His loss to the Liberties is immeasurable. He was one of life's gentlemen and a Liberties legend. Sleep well, old friend.
John called into our shop opposite Kevin st. Garda station for the 5 papers every morning after coming from his swim in the 40ft around 6 am for over 27 years. He didn’t do panic. He had his finger on the pulse on 95% of the going on’s in the liberties.Best T.D. Dublin 8 area never had. I don’t think he ever erected an election poster and you couldn’t claim much on expenses from cycling a bicycle. Ni beidh a leith was ann aris
R.I.P. John a gentleman

John you done so much for the community of Dublin 8 RIP
We are very sorry to hear about your sad loss. John's passing is a huge loss for us all. John was a wonderful person, good humoured, selflessly kind, who cared more for the community than he ever did for himself. He was a true socialist and a great role model for what we would envisage a caring socialist society should be. It was a real priviledge to have known him.
Words can never express the sadness we feel at the passing of John. He was a selfless generous and hard-working man. His gentle manner along with his friendly face , will forever remain in our hearts . God bless you John xx
R.I.P. John. Remember you well from my days in the Holy Faith Convent. A very kind and thoughtful gentleman
