John (Jack) Gardiner

Sincere condolences to Jack’s family and friends. He was a great support to me when I did my Masters in Forestry back in 2000. A wise and funny man with a great knowledge of silviculture. RIP Jack.

My deepest sympathies to Martina, Ed, John, Bob, and Cathy. I’m sorry I couldn’t attend the funeral to offer condolences in person.
Jack was some man! When I worked as supervising officer in Deansgrange, I’d hear that booming voice: “Where is Young?” I’d walk to the middle of the hall like a scolded schoolboy. If I spoke quietly, he’d roar back, “So you’re telling me to vote for Sinn Féin?” I’d have to shout that I couldn’t advise him on any party!

I was always suspicious as he started election day in Tipperary and ended it in Dublin. When I asked him about this, I was told to mind my own business!

He was mischievous—his mouth curling before a grin was the warning sign. I’d brace myself, but look forward to the next wind-up.

Jack claimed "I'm not a clever man, just lucky a lucky man". He was certainly lucky to meet Brenda. However, he was exceptionally intelligent. His academic record was only part of it; his skill as a negotiator in UCD showed empathy, analysis, and an ability to bring people together.

I’ll miss the chats and his humour. May he rest in peace.

His contributions to UCD and specifically to forestry — and to the people within it — were profound.
He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jack. Such a wealth of knowledge. He was always good company to be with. His presence will be remembered all around Old Conna golf course. He was a good golfer too with terrific skill in his wrists. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all his family and extended family. Lord rest him!
