I was very sad to hear that John had passed away. My sincere sympathy to Patricia, Sheila, Maureen and all John’s cousins, neighbours and friends. I have very fond memories of growing up at Roughty and of our wonderful neighbours and friends John, Jimmy and their mum and dad Jerry and Nellie. When Jimmy was at home he was always in our house, much loved and welcomed. When John returned to Roughty from Kilkenny he frequently visited my dad and continued after my dad passed away to visit the wonderful lady Bridie who looked after my dad. He was much loved and his visits greatly appreciated.
I spoke with John about ten days before he passed away and he told me that his earthly pilgrimage was nearing the end and he was calm and at peace. I had a sense that he was accepting it with great courage and dignity.
John was highly intelligent and had a huge knowledge of many subjects which he was always ready to discuss.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time and may John’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace.

We were class mates in Holy Cross - and at one stage sat together . What a great
Mind he had , generous with his knowledge especially in History and Latin . We later worked in the Civil Service and sometimes travelled on the train together to Dublin.
He loved that river Roughty , and will be happy to join his beloved parents and late brother on the Eternal River.

The term ' a legal eagle ' is one that was very appropriate in describing John. His attention to detail and his ability to find legal precedents was more often than not a source of amazement to both adversaries and colleagues. Deepest sympathy to Patricia, Cousins, and extended family on the sad passing of my dear friend John. On our recent conversation, John told me that it was nearing the end of his journey here on earth and he was calmly prepared for it. I have happy memories of my childhood growing up with him. Every April, when John and his Dad, Jerry, with their fishing crew, in their boat sailed up the Roughly river, it was a pleasant reminder that summer was nigh. John was highly intelligent and had an incredible memory. He frequently wrote me ten page letters to the United States. He had a wide array of interests. The letters would include topics on history, politics and climate. I will greatly miss my childhood friend and his letters. May you Rest In Peace John

I worked with John for a number of years in the old "D" and "Farming" sections in Kilkenny Revenue and I have the fondest of memories from those times. His brilliant mind shone throughout his work (and I can still see his tiny exquisite handwriting) and his sense of humour often lead to outbursts of fun and laughter during Tea breaks. My condolences to John's cousins and many friends on his sad passing. I knew John from his days with Revenue in Kilkenny. I enjoyed an 'interesting' rugby weekend in Edinburgh in 1985 with him. He was great company and fun to be with.

We had many good times with John in Kilkenny and in Kenmare. He wrote many eloquent letters on behalf of the Revenue. His legal and historical knowledge was exceptional. He was marvelous and incisive on nany subjects. He had rougish good humour. His knowledge of historical and current affairs was unequaled.
His stories on fishing the Roughty with his dad and brother told a story of plentiful salmon, alas now gone.
