Sincere condolences to all the family on the death of John. His courage facing his illness is an inspiration. He was so much loved in school. He was an inspiring teacher and much loved colleague. He was a wonderful teacher, kind, gentle and compasssionate with his students. Thank you John for all you gave to Our Lady's Bower
My sincere condolences to John’s family on his sad passing. John was a fantastic teacher, I will be forever grateful to him for his enthusiasm and encouragement throughout the leaving cert cycle. It put a smile on my face every time I walked into his class when he had his music playing. His wit and manner will live on. Rest in eternal peace John.
My deepest condolences on the passing of John. He inspired me during every English class and taught me so much both from an educational and life skills perspective.
I will always remember asking him how to say Sylvia Plath's work is both sad and beautiful in an essay, he laughed and replied "you just said it". He often spoke about his children in class, his love for you was so clear.
Effortlessly through his humour, passion and stories he made English so enjoyable. As a Leaving Cert student, you felt like you had won the lottery when you got an A from him.
Rest in peace Mr McGuinness, you made a lasting impact on so many and will never be forgotten.

I was so sad to hear of Mr McGuinness' passing. Mr McGuinness was my English teacher for just one year of secondary school, but his classes are the ones that stand out most in my mind. Not only was he a phenomenal teacher but he also made Junior Cert English classes fascinating with his personal stories and incredibly wide knowledge. I also will always remember the length at which he spoke about his children in class. The love he had for his family was always clear. My sincere condolences to you all at this time. May he rest in peace.
Sorry to hear about the passing of your father Tom. RIP
My sincere condolences to John’s children Jack, Tom and Eva. I was lucky enough to have Mr McGuinness for my whole 6 years at OLB and he was my favourite teacher. He saw potential in his students and would go above and beyond to provide us with the best possible education. He did more than teach, he inspired. He was extremely intelligent yet humble and so funny yet always compassionate.
However what strook me most about Mr McGuinness was the pride he had for his children. From stories of his son’s rowing to his daughters first disco, the way he spoke of his kids would warm the hearts of the whole class. You really were the lights of his lives. He was a true gentleman, may he rest in peace ❤️

My deepest sympathies to all of John’s family and friends on his very sad passing. He was a wonderful friend and colleague, always up for the chat and a joke. The top floor of the Bower was always alive with his playlist of tunes that he would play as his students walked into his class. It set a caring and enthusiastic tone to his teaching and to his everyday life. He spoke so often of his absolute pride and awe of you Tom, Jack and Eva and I have no doubt his traits of compassion and care for others and laughter will live on through you all. He left his mark with so many of us in the Bower and we are all the better for having had him in our lives. We will miss you terribly John. Rest in Peace friend x
This is so devastating to hear. He taught me English during my first years at Our Lady's Bower, and I still think of him with the fondest of memories and with a smile. I especially remember his involvement in the 1st year public speaking competition and his great help in preparing us students for it. He will be dearly missed by students and teachers alike.
It is so heartbreaking to read such a thing. He taught me english through my junior cycle years, and actually made the subject enjoyable. For me, and for everyone else he taught. He was always with a smile and rarely got mad, and he told us many of his own stories. It was such a pleasure being a student of his. May his gentle soul rest in peace, and for his family to take care of themselves during this time of grieving.
So horrible to hear, Mr McGuinness was a wonderful english teacher and I had the pleasure of having him as a teacher in my first year at Our Lady's Bower. Always brought smiles to the class and was a really funny man. So sorry to hear, rest in peace.
My deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. McGuinness, especially his three children Jack, Tom and Eva. I only had the pleasure of being a student of his during my transition year where he talked about his three children so fondly. I have great memories of his classes during that year where he tapped into our interests to encourage a love for English. One of my favourite memories was learning about poetry through Eminem’s rap “Lose yourself”. His enthusiasm for the subject was palpable throughout the school. May he rest in peace.
