Kevin Thornton

To David and all the the Thornton family. Sincere condolences on the passing of your lovely father. He was a big part of my growing up in Galway and it is hard to believe we will not see his smiling face again. I have very fond memories of Kevin whom I knew since my youth, mainly through playing tennis at GLTC and being friends with David. Apart from being a fine tennis and squash player, Kevin was a true gentleman. He was always friendly and welcoming, and a pleasure to meet. He will be missed by so many. May he Rest in Peace.

My deepest condolences to Miriam and family on the passing of dear Kevin. I've only just heard the sad news. Like many others, Kevin also taught me English and Christian Doctrine in Garbally, so many years ago. A great teacher, universally liked by all students. Our lives moved on and when he moved to Maree, we met again some years ago on the pier in Renville. I said to him, 'I know you, you taught me in Garbally' and his eyes lit up. Lots of questions followed as we recalled the students of the day and the sporting achievements. We met infrequently thereafter, as he took his walk at the pier; he'd always come over as we were drying off. The last time was in Sept and he told me he was moving back to Galway. I am saddened to know that was our last chat. Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a Anam. May he RIP.

To Ian and the Thornton family, my sincere condolences on your loss. Kevin was a great English teacher, tennis coach and such a positive influence when I was younger. He will be greatly missed.

Kevin was a great teacher in the old tradition of teacher and pupil. He was my English teacher in Garbally, Ballinaloe. My memory of him is his ability to see literature as a watchtower on life with all of its unexpected turns and nuances. Until we met again "Do Chara." Gerry

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Thornton. He was always a lovely and respectful man, and without doubt my favourite teacher in The Bish. He always had interesting anecdotes to impart and was a man who loved a bargin. Coincidentally I rented your old house in Dalton Drive for a year in 2008 / 2009 and was very happy there.

Kevin was an extraordinary teacher. I had him for English class of 1980. We had Hamlet and Persuasion as our text books. Now trying to engage 16 year-old boys with a Jane Austen novel would’ve been impossible without his genuine love for the subject one of my favorite teachers and an absolute gentleman Deepest sympathies to all the family

Sincere comdolances to Kevins Family on his passing. He was a sincere and kind peron and had the privilege of being a student with him in Garbally College in the 50's. We met occasionally in Galway down the years and a most enjoyable encounter. May he rest in peace

Condolences to the Thornton family on the loss of such a great gentleman. I am very sad to hear that he has passed away.

I was in his English class for InterCert in the 70's and remember him as kind and respectful no matter what the situation.

He was a great teacher, innovative and always encouraging. I remember once he brought in someone from Monaghan to read Patrick Kavanagh's poetry to us so that we we get a better sense of the poetry as Kavanagh would have written it and that has stayed with me to this day.

Kevin was one of the nicest men you could ever meet, an amazing sports mind and teacher, gave me a love for tennis that I still have to this day. Broken by the loss of Laura all those years ago, an incredible spirit she was, very sad day for the Thornton’s, Miriam, Ian, David, Sarah, the most impressive family line up of tennis and squash players the country has ever seen.
