To all the Dowd family we are so sorry about your husband and dad. Nicola was our class rep in Senan in 1985 and 1986 and she was a very good class rep and and a. good classmate. I remember her baby sister was born during the weeks leading up to Christmas that year.

Sorry for late comments but was unaware of Kieran’s passing. A pity because would have liked to pass on my thanks in person to his family for the great mentoring provided by Kieran
when a student passing through UCC many moons ago. Am only one of thousands but fond memories. My condolences to all.

Sincere sympathy to all the Dowd family on the passing of Kieran. I had the pleasure of working for him in UCC for a short time. He was a true gentleman, way ahead of his time in terms of his vision for sport and sport development, and so well respected by all who knew him.

I remember Kieran so fondly during my rugby playing days at UCC almost 40 years ago. He was a gentleman and always so supportive and helpful and good humoured. May he rest in peace and offering my sincere sympathies to all the family on your loss.

I first met Kieran when his girlfriend Una was sister of mine Anne, in Belfast. Our two families have been close for near 70 years, and particularly each summer in Derrynane, camping beside Keatings. My Belfast children were at his funeral. It was edifying to see his children carry his coffin, three girls, three boys. Anne died ten year ago. Now Kieran's death further marks the fading of an era, but onward progress of our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. May they prosper and he rest in peace. Amen

My sincere sympathies to all of Kieran's family and friends on his passing. I had the honour of being guided by Kieran during my time on the Athletic Union in the late 90's.
His advocacy for all students and vision for the future led to the many developments in the Dyke and the Farm. He had a deep knowledge and love for all sports and ensured the Skull and Crossbones were worn with pride by all. Rest easily Kieran a chara.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Úna, her family and the wider connections on Kieran’s sad death. He will be missed by many of us but none more so than his family. I got to know Kieran in the early 70s with both of us setting out on our Physical Education careers albeit both with different aspirations ahead. He was a positive and honest sounding board at all times and he will be missed.

I was privileged to play with a wonderful group of players in UCC and under his guidance we won the Collingwood Cup in 1973 for the first time. My condolences to Una and family at this sad time. I was secretary of UCC soccer club in 1981 and it took us a while to realise that Kieran was encouraging us to do things ourselves ,rather than wait for UCC Ltd to deliver .

He loved the Collingwood cup being in Cork and he was delighted when we secured a sponsor for all teams ,and he was chuffed when UCC were paired with Jackie Lennox ,alas this has also departed.

He gave great support to College Corinthians when we needed pitches for our senior and junior teams before we secured our own grounds.

My sincere condolences on the sad news of Kieran’s passing, a dear friend and colleague to all of us in Student Sport Ireland.

Kieran was a guiding light to me when I took over the role of Chair of Student Sport Ireland. While Kieran was still President of SSI we attended many enjoyable events, functions, matches and meetings together. He was a true gentleman, who had the unique ability to ably manage several projects at the same time effortlessly. He was a trailblazer for 3rd level sport across our island and advocated for and influenced many national developments in sport and physical education particularly in the early years. The UCC Mardyke Arena is a testament to his tenacity and determination to acquire the best possible sporting facilities for the region, servicing both the students and the local communities.

I rarely ever had a conversation without him mentioning his beloved Úna and hearing updates about his adored family.

Rest in Peace Kieran - you will be missed by all of us involved in sport across our island. Xx

It was an honour and a pleasure to play for Kieran during my study years at UCC. He was an absolute gent and an excellent soccer coach. We spent a number of times in the car together going to university international matches during which he provided excellent life guidance and sporting insightfulness. Luckily I was able to pop into see Kieran in his office on some return trips home to Cork. May he rest in peace.
