Be at peace, Liam. You have had a lot to deal with for the last few years, you deserve some peace.
One of my (John) few regrets is that I left University of Limerick a few months before you arrived. I couldn’t find the academic companion there that we all need in Universities, the colleague with whom we share our readings, ideas, and hopes, knowing that sharing with that person brings them safely into the world. I left to find it in Cork and, three months later, I found it in Limerick also, when you arrived there. Fortunately, the distance between did not stop us meeting, getting to know each other, sharing ideas and hopes, working on projects together. The difference in height did not stop us greeting each other with a warm hug either. I was delighted to tell you on your 70th birthday that, even though you may never have realised it, you were my academic big brother. Whether it was meeting you at iHCI in Cork or Limerick, ECCE in Belfast, ECSCW, the Hunt Museum, or on one or other of my Scandinavian visits (it was often easier to find you there than in Ireland), we would start chatting about life and research, or spiritual movements on the Islands off the West of Ireland, as if we had been together only a few days earlier. That is not easily found. I am very grateful that I had the good fortune to find it with my academic big brother.
We will miss you Liam, the fun and the laughter, and the daft WhatsApp texts and conversations.

Condolences to Nuala and the rest of the family on the passing of Liam.
Thank you, Liam, for your generosity in sharing your time, experience, and knowledge with me and so many others. You were a father figure to many. Your insights continue to inspire me today and which I have the pleasure of sharing with others. Your impact will be felt for generations to come. I am truly grateful to have known you.
Liam really was larger than life, an inspirational leader and I feel very lucky to have known him and learned from him.
Liam was such a great guy - he will be sorely missed. RIP Liam.
My condolences to Liam's family and friends. I was lucky to have Liam as my lecturer on the Interactive Media course in UL, he was so interesting, I loved his classes. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condolences on Liam's passing to all his family. I had the honour of meeting Liam as part of my doctoral studies, and of having him attend my doctoral defence, always challenged by his witty, inquisitive questions, and always delighted by his humour and friendliness. I found the service deeply moving, and as others have mentioned, cannot avoid wondering what he would have said, as an HCI expert, of its live streaming! Rest in peace, Liam. Your memory lives on in many of us, and we all cherish the moments together.
I was so sorry to hear the sad news earlier today. Liam was a larger than life character, interesting, intriguing, funny and inspirational. He inspired me since the first day I studied under him, and I find myself quoting him regularly. Liam's legacy will certainly live on. Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
My sincere sympathies on the loss of Liam.
My most heartfelt condolences to Liam's family and friends. He was a scholar and a gentleman - a true friend and an amazingly knowledgeable person. I met him just over 34 years ago at an Interact conference in Cambridge and immediately set about persuading him to join me in CSIS at the University of Limerick. To the surprise of some and the benefit of many he settled into this role and this place, enriching the lives of all who knew him. We will all remember him with gratitude and affection.
Condolences to Nuala and the rest of the family on the passing of Liam.
Our sincere sympathies to Liam’s brother Colm, sister Nuala, brother in law Pat and extended family on Liam's passing. Liam was a lovely neighbour and will be fondly remembered.
May his gentle soul Rest in Peace.

My condolences to Colm on this sad occasion.
Sincerest sympathy to Colm, Lucy & extended family on the passing of Liam. May he rest in peace.
My deepest condolences to Colm and Nuala on the passing of Liam. I knew him as a teenager growing up in Fort Field and even then found him to be a deep thinker, just like his lovely father Bill. As they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!! The service was a great tribute to Liam especially the eulogies from Nuala and Colm. The music chosen and all the tributes to him revealed his true essence and deep spirituality. It was so lovely to include his parents Monica and Bill in the service. They were really good neighbours to our family in fort Field and l remember them fondly. May Liam be in their lovely presence again now. Anne xxx
Rest in peace.
So very sorry to here of Liam's passing. Thinking of all his family and friends at this very sad time. RIP Liam xx
A gentleman, a scholar, a towering intellect, an inquiring mind, a generous hand, a humble demeanour. His light is quenched, but he will remain a beacon for me and for his many colleagues in academia.
Sincerest condolences to Annette and family.
Farewell, dear Liam, and thanks for 36 years of company, first as a mentor and a role model, then as a colleague and friend. As Brecht has said, a person really dies only when nobody remembers him or her anymore. So rest in peace, Liam. Long will you be warmly remembered by us who knew you; far longer by those who will continue to read your writings.

Sincerest condolences to Liam's family and friends. In the short while that Liam was a member of U3A Limerick we came to know him as a warm, larger than life, funny and very kind man. May he Rest in Peace.
Just heard of Liams passing, a gentleman. Rest in peace Liam.
Our sincere condolences to Colm and Lucy and the extended Bannon family on Liam’s passing. You are in our thoughts at this difficult time.
Colm and family, sincere sympathies on the loss of your brother Liam, a great academic whose contribution to life will clearly live on in those he inspired. May he rest in peace.
My sincere condoleances to Liam's family. The ceremony was simple and moving. The singing was beautiful. Heartfelt tributes went straight to the heart. May your memory be a blessing, Liam. Good night, sweet prince
Deepest sympathies Nuala on the passing of your brother. May he rest in peace.
It had the pleasure of meeting Liam many times over the years. He had a major impact on our field, and was always stimulating and thought provoking to talk to, but he was also very supportive of younger researchers. My deepest sympathies for your loss.
As a former classmate, friend and sport enthusiast my memories of Liam recall a very kind hearted man who smiled with ease and always had a swift witted word to lighten up the moment. My condolences to all family members.RIP, Frank Holt.
I met Liam at my first international conference in 1998. I was very impressed to meet the person who wrote the most influential work for our field, CSCW. But moreover, I was so impressed by his friendliness. He was so welcoming and fun (besides being so smart), that I immediately felt I could become a member of this community. I had the chance to organize workshops, a doctoral colloquium, and a summer school with him. I learned a lot, both intellectually and socially. After having dinner with him, I always felt a better person. I was sad when he announced his sickness, but I admired the way he fought, and how positive he was, it was amazing, and again lessons to learn from him. We had some online chats when he could not travel anymore, and I ended up thinking these interactions would remain forever. Sadly, it is not the case. Sincere condolences to Liam's family, he will be remembered also by his academic friends.

My condolences to Annette and Liam's family. As an academic colleague at UL, and friend over many years, Liam shared his wit, knowledge, conversation, and inquiring mind with myself and his many friends. A world leader in his field, Liam leaves an outstanding academic legacy both in his research and teaching activities. May he rest in peace.
Deepest sympathies Colm on the passing of your brother. May he rest in peace.
Sincere condolences to Liam’s family and friends. I was a student of his on the Interactive Media masters at UL in 2001 and 2002. I’m very glad to have had him as a lecturer, and to have had the opportunity to chat with him in more recent times. May he rest in peace.
Very sad to learn of Liam’s passing. Only met him once in my neighbours this July over coffee & cake for a couple of hours, yet he made quite an impression on me. He shared entertaining stories of his youth, love of sport, his academic career and the story of his battle with ill health.
What a resilient gent he was. My condolences to his family & friends. May he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Liam, being a friend of a friend I knew you barely.
However, Liam was always warm, accommodating and truly interesting in life.
His lifelong interest in human-computer interaction would have tickled his humor at this live streaming funeral!
RIP - Liam.

Condolences to Annette, and Liam's family on his passing. I have fond memories of Liam in the IDC. A great intellect and gentle soul. He had the ability to break down the most complex subjects. After a conversation with Liam I always walked away with more questions than I had beforehand. I was always thankful of his leadership and guidance.
Rest in peace Liam. Thank you.

Liam was a true gentleman. He was kind, funny, loyal to his loved ones and an all round lovely man. I will always appreciate his kind words, witty conversation and how much he helped me after losing my parents. It is so clear how much he was loved by all who knew him. Take care Liam , I will miss you beyond what words can say x Claire
Liam was a nice and dynamic colleague, I met him in several HCI conferences, and I would like to express my condolences to the family and wish him good luck on the new journey
Liam was a very cheerful colleague and important mentor for me. He was a lighthouse for our discipline. But more importantly , and this was his main message in the last few years, he reminded us that caring for each other and living to the fullest valuing the simple things should not be compromised for any career goal. Rest in peace Liam. I will miss you.
I was saddened to hear about Liam's passing. He was a truly remarkable individual who had a profound impact on those around him.
During my time at the IDC back in 2004, Liam was an inspiring leader who helped make it a vibrant and engaging place. His dedication, intellect, and ability to guide others were truly admirable. Whether it was pointing me towards an insightful book or nudging me in the right direction, Liam had a unique gift for supporting and enriching the lives of those he interacted with.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. Liam's legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the difference he made. He was indeed a great man, and his spirit and memory will not be forgotten.
Sincerely,
Nici Le Gear (Quinn).

It was an honour to meet Professor Bannon during his visits to the University of Limerick. On behalf of the Interaction Design Centre, please accept our deepest sympathies
Cousin Liam - you taught me how to run cross-country, both literally and metaphorically. So many wonderful memories of family holidays together across the continents. You’ll be deeply missed.
I still hope we can escape living in the memories of others by just living in the immortality of problems, solutions, questions, answers, and even, if possible, of ourselves. After all, a change is gonna come.

This is such a sad and devastating news ...... we (and he) knew that Liam was very sick but he still had the good spirit to survive and plans for some futures ... still when I spoke to him the last time some few months ago .....
It was very impressive how long he survived this very serious illness.
Liam was a very bright guy, well read, and visionary in his conceptions and research agenda. His work paved the way for the European Computer Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) community. He was an excellent networker with a global vision and impact.
My deepest condulencies ......

My sincere condolences to Colm and Nuala. Happy memories of a classmate for many years in Terenure College and as teammate on the rugby field and as a stylish tennis player. Well done Liam. Árd bhfear thú.
My condolences to all of Liam’s family, friends and everyone who was lucky enough to know him well, work with him for a long or short period or even just meet him once in a while.
He seemed to get great joy and satisfaction in bringing people together and seeing what they might make or do or what notion they could come up with. Occasionally he'd stoke the fire of creativity with a word or more than one word and then add a few more new people he'd found in his explorations to the mix, all the time coaxing and nudging us to be more open to what we heard and saw and to be critical and wary of assumptions, our own and those of others. I know I had much the better of the trade of our time working together as part of the IDC. I am glad to have known him and to have had his guidance. Thank you Liam.
