To all of the Gallaghers, family , extended family,friends and neighbours..My sympathies to you all.Lionel will be missed by the wider community and creative communities also but his contributions in particular to the quality of life in Sligo have been great. Thank you all for supporting him over the years in that.

Dear Joan and family,
We offer our sincere condolences on your great loss. We all knew Lionel through SGS, drama, football and all the rest.
Lisa had the pleasure of meeting him again with Darina and Fionnuala, at the premiere of a film he was in when she lived in London.
Our own mother, Bernadette, had just told me the other day, before she passed away unexpectedly herself, that she was saddened by his passing and had yet to sympathise with you Joan. She held you both in high regard and always enjoyed meeting you both. So I pass on her love to you now.

I was very sorry to hearing about the death of Lionel. Deepest sympathy to Joan, Conor, Fionnuala, Clodagh, Darina and Fergal and all those who loved him. He was a wonderful man, and I always enjoyed our chats. His legacy will live on through his great contribution to the arts down through the years and in his published writings. I have just read the many many condolences written on the passing of Lionel Gallagher and it occurred to me that it was a shame he was not alive to read them himself … had he any idea the high regard in which he was held by so many people in all walks of life and all ages. He was one of my favourite teachers. He taught me Geography and I can still see his skill up at the blackboard drawing the countries of the world. I now have no hesitation in spelling ‘Mediterranean’! I also have fond memories of Joan teaching me English. Fortunately I got to meet them both as an adult on a few occasions when I returned to Ireland in 2016 after many years living abroad. A very different scene to a teacher/pupil relationship. May Lionel rest in peace and I think particularly of Joan in her loss (but what a wonderful life they led) and of course the extended family.

We knew Lionel through his involvement with Connacht Schools Rugby. One of lifes true gentlemen, Lionel was well liked and held in high esteem by colleagues and opposition alike. He was very well respected.

So sorry to hear about Lionel, when I joined the Drama Circle as a shy teenager following a family tragedy over 50 years ago, his gentle, kind and generous spirit was instrumental in nurturing a love of theatre that ultimately became a career, for which I’m deeply grateful. My condolences to Joan and his lovely family. He will surely rest in peace.

I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the Gallagher Family on the death of Lionel, may he rest in peace. I met Lionel when I attended the Presentation Brothers Secondary school in Carrick-on -Shannon during 1951/52. We were both picked for the Leitrim County Minor team that year. I lost contact when my father (a Garda Sargant) was transferred back to Cavan.

Saddened to read of Mr Gallagher's passing. He had a life well lived and his being has certainly left this world a better place. In the 1980s I recall missing most of a school term with pneumonia and Mr Gallagher would handwrite letters checking in, wishing me well, and giving updates on what was happenening at school. I never forgot his kindness. A gentleman through and through.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad, he was my maths teacher in school and despite his best attempts I was never going to excel in the subject but managed to scrape a pass in the leaving cert for which he was both amazed and delighted. Very sad to hear of Lionel Gallaghers death. He was a very kind and caring man. Always very welcoming when I was back at the school for past pupils reunions. He was my maths teacher for 2 years in the school, he had endless patience with all the pupils. As vice principal and acting head master he did a wonderful job of supporting students and staff. He and his wife Joan were great supporters of the arts, a love inherited by their children.
