FOR MANY YEARS , we were next door neighbours in Derrygarron , Portlaoise ….
AND WHAT GREAT NEIGHBOURS, THEY WERE TO US !!
Martin would always bring us a share of the first crop of vegetables from his garden; where he grew top quality carrots, onions, turnips and ,in particular his potatoes .
Indeed I tried in vain to emulate Martin’s beautiful specimens, grown on soil considered too rich and too dry for a crop that thrived on the poor wetlands of the West
In fact , he was a DIY MAN WHO COULD TURN HIS HAND to anything involved with timber or cement.
But despite this abundance of talent on his part , Martin remained a quintessential country lad ; gentle , down to earth with a self-deprecating wit which he used to great effect whenever he needed to divert attention away from his accomplishments.

I met him for the first time about 35 years ago when I was doing an athletics feature for The Connacht Tribune. He was helpful then and on many, many occasions ever since. Fond memories of Martin who with a few people founded Portumna Athletic Club, He was first Chairperson and I had the pleasure of working as Secretary with him. Martin also trained the athletes and gave so much time, energy,support and guidance to all. He had great patience and understanding and was always encouraging no matter what the result..
