Martin Hession, the mention of his name has always filled my heart with a reverence for the man who was such a part of our school days in St Colman’s College, Claremorris. The great beauty about Martin was the way he treated all in his classes with the same respect and incredible compassion. We loved our geography classes and time spent in the company of Martin during those five years in St Colman’s led to a lifetime of enduring respect for a man whose greatness lay in the nobility and simplicity of his upbringing on a farm in rural Mayo during times when people shared whatever they had with their neighbours and helped out in every way they could.
It is fair to say that, long after we left the college, we all loved to meet Martin on life’s journey and he remained the same down-to-earth and most genuine person you could ever hope to meet. He and Ena were a great ‘team’ and raised a lovely family of four daughters, Mary, Anne, Catriona and Helena. Martin was the first ‘lay’ principal of St Colman’s and no one was more deserving of that honour. Thousands of pupils of St Colman’s were privileged to have known Martin as an absolute gentleman. We will remember you with the greatest fondness, Martin.
