I had the pleasure of meeting Marty at Mags & Richie’s house on a few occasions over the years. He had a wonderful dry wit and I used to enjoy chatting with him.
His suffering is over and I feel sure he must be in a better place now.

Dearest Martin,

You introduced me to the bike. I still fondly remember my first club ride with you out to Castlecomer when I was just 15. I can still feel the excitement of getting up early on Sunday mornings to go out on the rides you led and the cycling videos you showed me, patiently explaining tactics and strategy.

I remember you inviting me over to your home to watch the greats, Kelly and Roche, because you had Eurosport. I still laugh when I think of the two of us on our knees in your sitting room, screaming for Sean Kelly, beating our fists on the carpet to give our hero the energy to win Milan–San Remo.

I have so many dear memories not least the way you could have me in tears of laughter with your anecdotes. You were a great man, and one who meant so much to me in those early years. Sharing your passion, being there for the great wins, and also being there to console me when things didn’t quite go to plan always encouraging me to focus on the next big race.

You will be dearly missed. My most sincere condolences to Joan, Mags, Joan, Eddie, Richie, and Murt.

I have many fond memories of Martin from our days in Lacken Pitch and Putt Club in the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s and the numerous battles between us, Martin being a formidable adversary. A wonderful player, he gave great encouragement to all the younger members at that time and was an exemplary role model for all. May Martin’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace. The Ship

What is dying
I am standing on the seashore, a ship sails in the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon and someone at my side says: "She is gone."
Gone!
Where
Gone from my sight that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says,
