Mary O'Connell

As a child growing up in Bantry going to the old library in Barrack St on a Saturday morning was a great treat, Mary was so kind and patient as we rummaged through the children section, and full of good advice as we got older. A true public sevice librarian. May she rest in peace.

Mary played a big part in our childhood with all of the wonderful summers we spent in Bantry . This carried on with our own children as they all loved Mary too as she was very kind to them when passing many evenings in Parade Field . R.I.P

Words can’t express how much I will miss Mary. She was a loved member of our family and a huge part of my childhood, always preparing book selections for me, choosing what to read next and really shaping my whole view of literature. She was a witty, fun and gentle person with a lovely mind. Her likes will definitely not be seen again. May she rest in peace.

Sincere condolences to Mary's cousins and extended family on her passing.
Before moving to the "new" library in Bridge Street in the early 1970's, Mary had worked in the library in Barrack Street and also when it was situated further downtown back in the 1960's. I worked with Mary from 1984 to 1992 when she retired. So, she had a very long career in the library service.
Mary had a great way with the public and was very knowledgeable in her job. As Bantry Library celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Mary was the last surviving link with the staff when it opened its doors in 1974. Her other colleague at that time, the late Seán Ó Súilleabháin, passed away in 2021.
I will have long lasting memories of Mary. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.
