A few years ago I visited Mattie at his home in Balla doing a newspaper feature on The Balla Pipe Band. I got a lovey welcome from Mattie and Patsy. For over three hours and copious mugs of tea we chatted as he produced volumes of scrapbooks filled with photos and reams of paper cuttings. He also spoke fondly of his time working with Mc Walter's of Balla. My abiding memory is of an unassuming man with a lovely placid manner bereft of any high notions or pretence. He loved The Balla Pipe Band. He and his band set the tempo on days Mayo stepped out and put its best foot forward. He proudly paraded football legends around McHale Park. Mattie and the Balla Pipe Band played for Presidents and stars but applied the same pride as they marched down village streets and Mattie beating his drum. Like he did with all other tasks he applied himself to Mattie Dowd gave it his finest. He knew no other way. He surely was the leader of the band. A gentleman and a gentle man. Condolences to Patsy and his family on his passing. He will be missed.

To all the Dowd family, I was very sad to hear Mattie had passed away. Growing up in Balla he was a pillar of society. He represented everything we talk about when we say ‘community’. He lit every encounter with a smile and a warm and sincere welcome when you met him. We have lost a great person in the community and I am sure it is very hard for Patsy and the family. I hope all the great memories from people will help you at this time.

I first met Mattie decades ago as we were both 'on the road'
We had great chats when we met. He always had a good story to tell.
I then changed my job, but I still managed to meet Mattie....as part of the Balla Pipe Band. As a cameraman, I have filmed quite a few St. Patrick's Day parades in my home town, Shrule.
Mattie was always there taking part and we had some more chats! Enjoyable but shirt as the band headed to the next town & the next parade.
He was a lovely man & a gentle man.
