Michael Mullen

My condolences to all Michael's family on your loss. I only ever experienced him as a rugby coach and never as a teacher but I'm sure he gave most of us the greatest sporting memory of our lives by bringing us to the 1984 Senior Cup final with a tiny cohort of players. His other great inspriation was convincing us that it was possible to excel in sport and academics simultaneously with the aim of becoming "well-rounded" students. A towering figure over many decades in the life of CBC, he will be missed.

We were very sorry to hear about your Dad Muriel, may he RIP now with your lovely Mum. Thinking of you, Maria , Michael and all the family at this sad time. Have fond memories of our afternoons off school watching the cup rugby at Donnybrook with our Mums and the athletics days as well. Paul remembers your Dad from his CBC days too. Take care xx

We got to know Michael on IRFU Charitable Trust fundraising trips to Australia in 2003 and Japan in 2019. His energy levels were unreal, for our senior citizen, but no hurdle was insurmountable no matter what the challenge. He even travelled down to us to help celebrate Jill’s birthday in Jack White’s a few years ago, motoring through Covid, tea and birthday cake like a teenager. He was truly one of a kind and his dedication to CBC Monkstown and to rugby was exemplary, over what to many would seem a lifetime. He has earned his rest and can hopefully smile down on a Triple Crown tussle next Saturday…..rest easy old friend.

I was so saddened by Michael’s passing, he was such a lovely man a real gentleman, a great teacher and an amazing athletics and rugby coach! Without him at the helm and dragging us out of bed on cold wet Saturday mornings for training I don’t think we could have won that cup. We were and are so proud of him as our coach, we listened to him, learnt from him and most importantly he gave us the belief that we could win. Many of us had the pleasure of meeting Michael at his 90th Birthday and it was such a good evening. Hard to believe he is no longer with us. He will live on in our memories forever for all the right reasons and as an amazing rugby coach, he truly deserved that win! Rest in Peace Michael, you’re loved by many!

My Deepest sympathy to all the Mullen family on the passing of Michael a truly remarkable man and a much loved teacher over many years at CBC Monkstown Park , where he taught our class Latin, History and English. He was always very kind and cheerful and he really enjoyed every moment in CBC Monkstown in every aspect of Rugby associated with the school. Our Class of 1973 had the honour of celebrating our 50 Class reunion in 2023, in the Talbot Hotel, Stillorgan where Michael was invited as our special guest, and he really enjoyed every moment of telling stories of the past years. Michael may you today rest in peace with our Lord Amen....

"Skinner" was an inspiration as a rugby coach for the 1966 JCT at CBC. But more importantly, although I did not realize it at the time, he molded me into being a leader. He instilled in me, and the JCT team, the discipline to work hard and prepare for important life events, sport certainly, but life in general. After CBC won the SCT, he tracked me down in USA and sent me a personal note thanking me for all we had done to help achieve this remarkable success in Leinster schools rugby. I treasure his personal note to me and offer my sincere sincere condolences to his family on his passing.

So sad to hear of Michael's passing. He was a really good and friendly neighbour who always stopped for a chat. He was also my coach and teacher. We are sorry that we won't be able to attend the funeral as we are out of the country at the moment.

Michael will be missed by all who encountered him. A legendary schools rugby coach at CBC Monkstown bringing glory to the school with a Leinster Senior Cup win.
His infectious personality and caring and kind nature was very evident in his extraordinary support for the seriously injured players in the IRFU Charitable Trust. He raised many thousands of €uros for those lads and never lost his enthusiasm in the drive to help them. Michael can rest easy for he has done his bit. What a man !! MQ x

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your father. I had the privilege of being coached & taught by Michael. He was a legend in CBC, one of those rare people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

In more recent years I had the pleasure of bumping into him at our local coffee shop, and it was always a joy to chat with him. He never lost that warmth and enthusiasm that made him so special to so many of us.

The CBC rugby community and all who passed through the school owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for his dedication and passion over so many decades. He will be missed.

Some 40 years ago, I met Michael when I was appointed Principal of CBC Monkstown.
A most courteous and welcoming colleague, Michael was a joy to work with.
A man of enthusiasm and passion, his wise council was a wonderful support as I navigated the challenges of Principalship. For that I am eternally grateful.
My sincere sympathy goes to Michael's children, grandchildren and extended family. You have the consolation of knowing that his was a life which was indeed well lived.

Dear Maria, Muriel, Michael and extended family members, our sincere and deepest condolences to you all following the passing of your beloved Michael. Michael was a dedicated, enthusiastic and supportive teacher, colleague, mentor and coach to many in the CBC Community, over an association extending beyond 50 years. Teaching Latin, English and History in CBC, Michael quickly became synonymous with rugby and athletics coaching in the school, as well as being the encouraging games-master for many years. Michael was the inspiring coach of the victorious CBC Leinster Schools' Rugby Senior Cup-Winning team of 1976.

Michael taught me in CBC for one year, '61/62', I remember. He inculcated a love of rugby which has been and is a joy of my life. RIP.

Mick Mullen first taught me in first year CBC about 1959.
It was probably his first year as a teacher and all I remember was his kindness and help for the year (even though I had no interest in rugby)
