I have such fond memories of Michael and his kindness to me, from the time that I joined SETU (WRTC as it then was) in 1983. He was an extraordinarily thoughtful, gifted, insightful and talented physicist.
Sincere sympathy to the nieces and nephews of Michael.
Many happy memories of going to Griffith's Place .
Thank you, Michael, for your lovely friendship, deep wisdom, sparkling intellect, gentle humour and generous presence. For a spirit who lightly wandered on this earth, you touched the hearts & souls of so many. May your beloved music and poetry welcome you into the heavens.
Sincere sympathy to your family, and gratitude to Angela & Gabriel for the awe inspiring sensitivity of their care. You made it easy for the rest of us.
Sincere condolences to Michael's family at this sad time. He was an absolute gentleman. He knew my Dad well and though I never had the pleasure of having him as a lecturer he was in the department during my time there and offered help if ever it was needed. Years later we always stopped for a chat when we met. It was always a pleasure to talk to Michael, such a kind and interesting man. May he rest in peace.

I was extremely sad to hear Michael had passed away, our family friendship goes back many years. The Finegans lived across the road from Michael and his family in Griffiths Place, and our Grandad Hartery was friends with Michael’s maternal grandfather. Although I live in Australia I was blessed to see Michael a couple of times in the last few years and my condolences go out to his many family and friends.

Devastated to have heard about Michael’s passing.

Had Michael as a lecturer during my WRTC days and he was just too nice. Oftentimes I’d hear his voice in the old WRTC Library as he regularly gave extra tuition to his students, finding the time (and back then the space), to clarify subject matter for his students. He was so dedicated. God help you once he got to know your name because he’d use it all throughout class and check-in with you several times per lecture to make sure you were following along. He was so quirky and funny in his ways. But, so harmless and authentic too. His intelligence was obvious to us all but he never sought to remind us of that in any way. His was a quiet confidence. He never refused a question. He was such a gentleman.

I got to work briefly with him as a fellow lecturer and colleague at WIT but our paths crossed, like so many others, whilst he was out walking. I was so happy to see him walking again after hip surgery and we spoke at length about it and its affects on his outings. He struck me as being so young of heart and full of verve.

We are all the less for his passing. See you in the starry night skies, Michael.

To Michael’s family I extend my deepest condolences at this very sad time. May he rest peacefully in his heavenly reward and may Michael’s memory always be a blessing to us.

Sad to hear of Michael's passing and my sympathy is with his family circle. Always a great colleague and friend in the days of WRTC and WIT. . .
So many students owe so much to your presence, intellectual vigour and support.
No doubt you are in bright climes.
Sincere condolences to the O'Keeffe family on the passing of Michael. A great teacher, and a great colleague. A lover of physics and philosophy, with an erudition that he bore lightly. He had a great superpower that I envied most. He could look at the sky and know whether to bring or not to bring a coat with him on his many walks. His Physics as Natural Philosophy will always have a special place on my bookshelf.
I heard with great sadness of Michael passing. Michael was an exceptional person – a towering intellect with great depth and insight and such gentleness and kindness.
A source of deep knowledge in quantum physics, philosophy and the quest for the hidden meaning of life, his answers always offered with self-effacing modesty suggesting you must have a better understanding than he - certainly not true for me.
I also remember fondly many happy swims in the Guillamene in younger times.
May Michael rest in glorious peace.

Sincere condolences to Michael's family and friends and all that knew him ,a pure gentleman who always made time to chat to everyone he met. May Michael rest in peace 🙏
Michael was a regular customer when I worked in the bookshop in UCC over twenty years ago. He'd come up every few weeks to buy books particularly on philosophy and physics. He was a fascinating abd erudite man to talk to and, more importantly, one of the nicest I've met in over thirty years of bookselling.
One of the nicest people you could ever meet. Michael would always ask to most thoughtful questions and had a kindly, curious mind. The world is poorer place without him in it.
Rest in Peace Michael. You were a great lecturer in Physics at WRTC (as it was then). You will be missed.

I was away with friends when I heard the sad news of the passing of such a special person that is Michael O'Keeffe. I tried to explain to those with me the unique caring, giving and sharing qualities that Michael had and was always so willing to give. I could not do him justice but as I read through the many condolence messages here from friends, colleagues, neighbors and from people he just met on the street I think tells the story far better than me of how special that Michael was and how he touched so many.
Rest in peace Michael it was a joy and privilege to have known you, worked with you and just shared time with you. Rest in peace.
Rest in peace Michael. My depest sympathy to all the O Keeffe Family.
Michael was a scholar and a gentleman. A phrase that is commonly used, but a most fitting epithet for Michael. A great intellect and warm human being and a dedicated lecturer sadly missed by all his colleagues at WRTC/WIT/SETU . Condolences to Michael's Family and close friends.
I knew Michael for over 20 years and would often bump into him when our paths crossed during his frequent long walks throughout Waterford city. We shared an interest in philosophy and our brief chats would frequently evolve into a lengthy and fascinating discussion at the end of which you wondered where the time went. Michael was an extraordinarily gentle, compassionate and thoughtful man whose kindness seemed to extend into the world at large. I will miss him very much. May he Rest in Peace.
Deepest sympathies to Michael's family and friends. I had Michael as a physics lecturer many years ago. A gentleman through and through. May he rest in peace.
