Thank you Michael for your wonderful words every Saturday for the last 5/6 years (I discovered your writings late). You lived a wonderful life and wrote about it in a beautiful way each week. I deeply loved your weekly words but my condolences to those that loved you deeply.
Condolences, Ethna

I grew up reading Another Life - Michael Viney helped me to realise that we can all have a little part to play in appreciating and nurturing the flora and fauna of our wonderful island. Thank you for sharing your gift for seeing the magic in the everyday. Rest in Peace.
So saddened to learn of Michael’s passing on my return from holidays. The rationale of having the Irish Times delivered on a Saturday was so I could read his column over a leisurely breakfast. This was diminished since February when he ceased to contribute. I had hoped he was to enjoy years of leisure without copy deadlines but sadly that was not to be. Grateful thanks from a fervent reader for allowing us to share in your western adventure over the years. Ní bheidh a leithéid le feiceáil arís.
Michael has been part of my private personal consciousness and the public consciousness of a tribe for decades. Ethna, I'm proud to say, is a West Cavan companero along the road less travelled. Michael, understated, profound, mysterious occupied another zone which resonates as I read June from a Year's Turning during the week and of lice and mice in Another Life today. Wonder how the wines of Helbon taste? Absence is difficult and Nowhere is hard. Not to mention mystery!
Sincere sympathy to Ethna and Michelle on the loss of Michael.
Sincere condolences to Ethna, Michele and all the Viney family on the sad passing of Michael. May he rest in peace.
To Ethna and Michelle, I am saddened to hear the sad news of Michael’s passing. A true environmentalist and a great ambassador for nature, the Irish countryside, and the simple things in life. Michael, through his writings, has left a wonderful legacy and will be an inspiration for those who will follow in his footsteps. May be rest in peace.
Deepest sympathy to you Eithne and all your family on the passing of Michael. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. 🙏
The West is Well Awakened by The Special Presence of a Special Three. One is Gone, but not "Away" ; He will remain like Will Shakespeare and Aristotle or as The Hen Scratches in The Sow's Hokings, He placed Our Fingers in The Pockets of God, Slan agus Beannacht, Compadre.

Heartfelt condolences to the Viney family for the passing of Michael. He was a treasure for the island in reminding us of the natural beauty that surrounds us and giving us a gentle nudge implying that we should wake up and take care of it. Saturdays will never be the same again. RIP MV
Dear Ethna..I have wonderful memories of working with you 48 years ago and sharing your love of Mayo. I enjoyed reading Michael's page every Saturday. My condolences to you and your daughter on your very sad loss.

Sincere sympathy to the Viney family on Michael’s passing. Thank you very much for sharing your lives and so much knowledge. Your articles on a Saturday were my first port of call.
I and my parents before always enjoyed reading the weekly articles with wonderful drawings as well as Ethna’s Eye on Nature. Truly grateful for all the wisdom and insight, success and failures he wrote about. Rest in peace
Just heard of Mr Viney's demise.
He made a huge contribution to the appreciation of Nature. His work was always thoroughly researched; no "fake news" hazard! And the drawings were fabulous.
Ethna published a few of my modest contributions in her equally important part of their shared pages.
Deepest sympathy to his family.

Thank you, Michael, for so many words of wisdom, most especially "Ireland: A Smithsonian Natural History".
Today, Saturday, is Michael Viney day, at least for the many loyal readers of his column in the Saturday edition of the Irish Times. Always informing and entertaining, it seemed as if it would go on forever. But all good things come to an end and so today, as he is laid to rest, we think of a life well lived and thank the spirits that brought him and his family to live among us in western Ireland. No doubt his life, and illustrations and writings, will continue to inspire present and future generations who share this finite planet.
Heartfelt sympathies to Ethna and Michele on their bereavement.

Deepest sympathy, Ethna and Michelle, on the passing of your beloved Michael. He leaves a wonderful legacy and will be greatly missed. Suaimhneas síoraí air.
Our heartfelt condolences Ethna and Michele on the passing of Michael. We deeply admired his captivating articles, beautiful paintings, and captivating books, each brimming with exquisite details and eloquent prose. With his departure, the world has undoubtedly become a duller and less captivating place. May his legacy continue to inspire and bring you solace during this difficult time.
Our deepest condolences to Ethna and Michele on the loss of your husband and father. A true guardian of the natural world and most especially a witness to Thallabawn and it’s surrounding landscape.
Dear Ethna and Michele

Condolences to Ethna and Michele on your loss. It was always the first page I read when I opened the paper on Saturday morning- the Vineys helped us see things in a different light.
Mr Viney provided such an insight into nature in his "Another Life" column. It was my favourite and first read section of the Irish Times every Saturday. Our loss is only a shadow to the loss felt by his family. What a remarkable man. Thank you for the years of information beautifully written and illustrated.
Dear Ethna and Michele,

Sincere sympathies to you Eithne and Michele - May he sleep peacefully
I have never been to Tallabawn, I have never been in your polytunnel, I have never seen those winter storms or your hawthorn's in full bloom. I've never peered out your window to see that landscape by your side, or walk the beach searching for natures nuggets washed in by the tide.
Michael you showed us more than you'll ever know, thanks for letting me take a peek into your wonderful world.
May you spirit dance on in the cosmos forever. RIP.
