Sincere sympathy to the Whelan family on your great loss.I first encountered Michael as a migrant student from Cloone,in his class in Aughavas in 1967.I clearly recall how he gave us great insight on the background to the 6 day Arab Israeli War, (june 1967)and made it feel very real for us.Sadly today nothing really has changed in that troubled part of the World, a great teacher,with a passion for History, he will be very much missed.Rest in peace Michael.
