Niav O'Higgins

Niav's untimely death is so unfair for her family and wide circle of friends.
Our friendship began decades ago in Fiesole. It continued through her London years where she generously hosted us ( and countless others who were passing through) and to Dublin.

When remembering her we will focus on her amazing laugh.

So sorry to hear of Niav’s passing. We at Powercomm didn’t have a chance to get to Niav that well. But we respected her advice and the lovely person she was. Sincere condolences to all her family. A most beautiful send off in the Garden chapel. You had the most amazing memories of her. May she rest in peace.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Niav’s untimely death so soon after her retirement and extend my sincere condolences to her family.

I feel grateful to have worked under Niav’s supervision for many years at Arthur Cox.

Niav was an accomplished and leading construction lawyer and a genuinely kind and empathetic individual. She was generous with her time, particularly towards junior colleagues, and consistently provided thoughtful, gentle and constructive guidance.

Niav was also a strong and respected advocate for women in the legal profession.

She was a valued colleague and I will always remember her warmth, good humour and distinctive hearty laugh.

I experienced her legal skills up close when we worked together on the Arthur Cox HQ project. Her contribution was enormous but always low key and understated but no less impactful. I met Niav in 1986 in Italy where we were both foreign students. She was funny, smart and just a beautiful person inside and out. We were so young, and had a lot of fun, whether it was having adventures together out and about, or sitting inside the apartment drinking wine, talking and laughing. Niav was a great friend if you needed support or a shoulder to lean on, someone who had your back and made you feel better anytime you were down. We lived an ocean away and at times went long stretches without contact, but I always considered Niav one of my dearest friends. It was a great privilege to have known her. I don't have the words to adequately express how profoundly sad I am to know that she’s not in this world anymore. My sincere sympathies go out to Niav's entire family and everyone who loved her.

My sincere condolences to Niav’s family. I worked on many projects with Niav over the last 20 years. Her ability to apply her vast knowledge to any project with grace, tenacity and humour was fantastic to experience. Niav will be sadly missed.

Dear Rachel, Maeve, Shiobhàn and Niall,
My sincere condolences to you with the loss of your daughter and sister. It is very hard to find the right words when such a loss occurs. Niav was sweet, considerate and at the same time had a mind of her own. Niav and I became friends in Italy where we both studied and generally had a great time in Siena. We partied, had serious conversations and laughed a lot. Now that she has gone, it feels so unreal and extremely unfair. I wish we could have seen each other in better times. Or that I could have been there for her when she was ill. She will always be my friend and in my mind.

My deepest sympathies to Niav's family. Niav was a warm, kind, funny, brave, bright, empathetic person. I was fortunate to know her as a friend and colleague for more than 25 years. I can still hear her infectious laugh...

I was very shocked to hear of Niav's passing. My memories of her go back to our childhood when our parents were close friends. Sending warmest sympathy to all the O'Higgins family.

I was a client of Niav when I was leading the development of Ulster University’s new Belfast campus. Throughout a 4 year period we worked closely together and I always felt supported and in strong hands with Niav throughout many legal battles.
She was a very good lawyer but also a lovely person committed to going the right thing. So I was extremely sad to hear of her death and my thoughts are with her family and friends on suffering this great loss.

My sincere condolences to Niav's family and friends on a tragic loss of such an extraordinary person. I worked with Niav for many years at Arthur Cox and will be forever grateful for her mentorship, empathy and sound advice. So many of her words of wisdom ring in my ear on a daily basis, but it was her actions more than words which left the bigger mark. She led by example: putting her team and their well-being first, always acting with integrity and authenticity, and being humble in victory and gracious in defeat. She was, without question, the "Queen of Construction Law" and she devoted much of her time in Arthur Cox to passing on her knowledge and bringing her team up to the same high standards that she held herself by. All of us who had the privilege of working with her owe it to her memory to carry forward that great legacy.

To all of the family and wide circle of friends of our dear colleague Niav. For over two decades, she was such a cheerful and friendly partner in Arthur Cox. She was an outstanding lawyer, recognised internationally, to boot. She was also a wonderful mentor to so many young lawyers who she cared for so authentically, always generous with her time and wisdom. Her loss is felt deeply by all her colleagues in Arthur Cox and her fellow retirees. How cruel that Niav did not get to enjoy the retirement she so richly deserved. Rest in peace Niav.
