To Ger, Richard, Aidan & Paddy and all of the O’Brian family can I express my profound sadness having been told by Ger over the phone that Mammy “Nanny Nora” had died RIP.
From the first day I met Nora I called her “Mammy Bear” she love it then and I never called her any other name from then on. To see that smile on her face and the sense of pride she felt … every time I’d meet her I say aloud “Hallo Mammy Bear” followed by a big hug and a kiss on the cheek … God … how I’ll miss that. As I am unable to travel due to restriction please permit to tell you this … I live here in Tralee. On the evening before my 2nd Graduation from the Munster Technological University I received a call from my family in Waterford telling me that my Gran-niece had become very ill and was life threating. Ten members family were to travel up but everything was cancelled and no one was coming up.
I was talking to Ger that same night. Feeling upset on my big day for the child and feeling so alone in the Brandon Hotel amid two and a half thousand people was pure hell.
I left the Hotel armed with my new Batchelors of Honours Degree walking home alone when all of a sudden I heard this voice shouting David, I turned around and who was it only ‘Mammy Bare’ and Ger … I cried a tear .. we went to the for a pint and Mammy Bear and Ger brought my out to Dinner that night and paid for the meal … May Nora’s gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
