P.J. MERRICK

Deepest sympathies on the loss of your father. I met him a number of years ago when he was researching the death of D.I. Potter in the War of Independence. I met him again at the Fethard Book Festival. We always had a good chat about history and the Merrick family, as my mother-in-laws mother was Merrick from near Bansha. He will be missed in history circles.

I was very sorry to learn today the sad news of PJ's passing. I would like to offer my sincere sympathy and condolences to all of his family, to his great many friends and to his lifelong friend and right-hand man John Hickey. PJ was a fine man, very likeable and we had a great many successful business dealings over the years. May he rest in peace and his memory and that of his dear wife Trish live on forever.

Condolences to all the Merrick family on the passing of PJ. I only ever met PJ twice in recent years and each time I came away a better person after meeting him. We talked for hours about Tracing and Townslands. His love for his wife was evident as he mentioned Trish many times during our brief encounters. Deeply shocked and saddened at PJ's sudden passing. He was as good a friend as anyone could ever hope to have. A man of integrity, someone you could always depend on. Played soccer with him, went to lots of matches, concerts, golf trips (even though he didn't play, himself and Trish were always happy to tag along and do their own thing, both were always great company) and numerous other social events. All great memories. He will be sadly missed.

I was sorry to hear of P.J. death. I had known P.J. for about 20yrs. and got to know him through various history lectures in Doon and Morroe. We only met 3 weeks at the launch of the new book on the Cloncurry Est. Little did I think it would our last meeting. My condolence to his wife and children

My condolences to Marie, all the Merricks and Ann. I sat beside PJ for eight years in primary school. From an early age, PJ ploughed his own furrow. He wasn’t much bothered if anyone followed- he supported Ipswich Town. Wherever he travelled and whomever he met in life, he treated with the same dignity and respect, always time to hear their story. It was a privilege to have known him.

It was with shock and sadness I learned of the sad and sudden passing of PJ, last Tuesday. A man I got to know some twenty five years ago, when I became postman in Caherconlish. From the get go he was, like all the Merricks, very welcoming and helpful in every way. He researched my Family Tree and gave me tips on how to go about it. Always used the " cupla focal " when I handed him the mail. "Gur raibh maith agat " was his signpost greeting. To his mother, Marie, his brother John and sisters, his children Jack, Kevin and Robyn, not forgetting his right hand man, John Hickey, and his partner, Ann, I offer my heartfelt sympathy. You will be missed PJ, but not forgotten. May your kind and gentle Soul Rest peacefully in the Arms of the Lord eternally .
